I’m going to ask you — once again — to not post these dedicated Ron Paul cheerleading threads. Yes, there is an off-topic section of the forum, but you are abusing it by aggressively spamming it with repetitive “advocacy” threads (as opposed to actual discussion) that nobody seems to be interested in.
I am a Ron Paul guy but don’t really poke in here to read that stuff. There’s plenty of places to get that stuff elsewhere.
However if I were back in town I’d be at the UCSD event tomorrow. With a Pigg discussing housing and the economy of course!!
April 1, 2012 at 8:58 PM in reply to: Florida foreclosure firm fires employees for wearing orange shirts #740980CardiffBaseballParticipant
sdrealtor, I agree that that FL is a funny place.
I don’t know if we can simplify it to an East Coast vs. West Coast of FL thing. I mean compare Jacksonville, on the East, vs. Naples on the West.
I think it has to do with better educated immigrants to Florida who came in search of warm weather, vs. the native pitchfork peasants.
In general, I’d say that South Florida is better than Central and North Florida, except for Gainesville a college, in North Central, that’s the Bloomington (not quite like Austin) of Florida.
The Panhandle is the armpit of FLA (F’ing Lower Alabama)
http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Florida%5B/quote%5DCould be true of the panhandle however a lot of people go to places like Destin for some R&R.
Frankly speaking for Orlando it seems fine to me. UCF is massive, and with that getting much much pickier about who gets in. Not quite at the level of the UC picky but not as easy as it used to be. As a result of the sheer size of UCF there are college graduates all over town. Now the downtown area is kinda sucky compared to something like the gas lamp, but remember they have to compete with Universal City Walk and Downtown Disney as far is night spots.
Bear in mind we were in Cardiff/Encinitas area, attended church regularly, and went to SFC in Solana Beach so if the area is slightly more “churchy” we basically were out there in Encinitas. Spending most of our time with youth baseball otherwise I find central florida to be every bit as baseball crazy as San Diego, however millions of people probably live in greater SoCal and either don’t have kids or they aren’t involved in baseball, so as big as it seems in SD, most of you could care less. In my case, it’s basically the same thing except the latins are now usually PR or Cuban. So for my family and what we do for extracurricular it’s virtually identical outside of not being close enough to walk on the beach at night.
If you surf, mountain climb, snowboard etc. then this place is of course a death sentence.
However culturally it’s not all yahoo redneck and I don’t see that nearly as much as I thought I would. There are a whole lot more blacks here and always have been so around here things are fairly integrated race wise. Tons of mixed race couples everywhere you go.
CardiffBaseballParticipantRandom points (errr incoherent ramblings)
– Friday a young black man, who no doubt could be Obama’s son, was put away for life. His crime was executing a couple of British Tourists who happened to get lost and drove down the wrong street. The parents of these young men blasted Obama for saying nothing despite three different letters having been sent.
http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/321429/20120329/murdered-british-tourists-attack-obama-parents.htm
– We have another young black man who was killed in Orlando, and trust me none of these grandstanders give a shit. Not a peep. How was he killed? Hazing incident back in November at the Citrus Bowl. 4-5 months now, nobody has been arrested, and you don’t see race hustlers asking why.
The Sanford chapter of the NAACP basically said Sharpton was an idiot today after his calls for increased levels of civil disobedience. The locals are saying get the F out of here, this will get resolved.
CardiffBaseballParticipantC’mon people do I have to educate you on race in Florida.
Since Zimmerman is considered the “perp” in this case he is a “white hispanic”.
However if the situation were completely different and we were talking about a victim of something that appears to be racially motivated, then they are simply “hispanics”. In that case we drop the “white”.
By the way Brian do you farkin’ know any Dominicans? Most look black. They consider themselves “hispanic”. In no way shape or form do they consider themselves aligned in any way with african-americans, nor do AA’s consider them part of the club. So I think the term “white hispanic” is basically one-step away from being retarded.
Remember the media lies like an MFer about race to rile people up if you’ve ever seen the MSNBC vid proving they lie to “make a story”. I’ll find the link if you haven’t. The narrative here as it became a media sensation was that it was a white-on-black crime. The only thing they could do at that point was save face calling him white-hispanic.
Sorry I live the next town south of Sanford and am watching the developments closely, and am really tired of the criminal extortionists in town (sharpton) whooping people into a frenzy. Even if we say Zimmermann is a white, white-on-black crime is almost statistically insignificant as a problem in our society, so I don’t appreciate Jesse screaming about black people being under attack. Today he seemed to temper those dumb-ass statements and just talk about violence in general being out of control and I can’t disagree with him there.
CardiffBaseballParticipantWifey just had a double mastectomy with stage 2 breast cancer.
I hadn’t thought that she was just a leech thanks. Soon Chemo starts up I’ll be sure at that time to let her know she’s a total leech. If only she’d maintained Brian’s lifestyle, she’d be cancer free. Not that every one of her aunt’s had the surgery and her sister died of Ovarian cancer at 42, family history alone makes her an automatic leech in the new progressive thinking world.
Viva la Revolucion!!!
CardiffBaseballParticipantIf you are doing the Back Squat, you could consider a Manta Ray.
November 30, 2011 at 8:33 PM in reply to: OT:. I never new about this hiring rule in the NFL… #733680CardiffBaseballParticipant
About the NFL. I’m surprised Ron Paul’s supporters are not all over themselves supporting the Rooney Rule.
BTW, I support affirmative action. It depends on how it’s applied.
If I run a business in a Hispanic area, I will hire a manager who can best relate with my customers and make me more money.
If our society needs more doctors that can serve minority under-served area, we should train students from those areas. They will then become professionals who can best deal with the problems in their communities. Society benefits as a whole.
Why would Ron Paul supporters be all over the Rooney Rule? I just happen to think it’s a stupid waste of time, but I have no problem with the rule per se. If the NFL wants it that way, who am I to say?
Also I am talking AA as something that is forced. It seems to me you are suggesting a free market decision, not AA. You have reasoned that having a hispanic manager is good for your enterprise outstanding. The rest of Piggs should not tell you “find the best hispanic”.
(though my last two hires were minority, an AA-Male and latin female)
November 28, 2011 at 9:42 PM in reply to: OT:. I never new about this hiring rule in the NFL… #733500CardiffBaseballParticipantAt work the other day this Vietnamese guy was bitching about how stupid the Rooney rule was to me and this black guy. I was a bit uncomfortable but my conscious was clear I wasn’t saying it, I was merely listening and playing devil’s advocate (despite deep down hating anything that smacks of affirmative action).
The black guy didn’t say much but, this being Florida he was a Jamaican and some of those brotha’s don’t consider themselves as african-americans. Either that or he just didn’t want to argue I am not certain, but I sensed he basically agreed with the case the other guy was making. The Vietnamese guy while hard to understand was adamant about how he thought it was wasting everyone’s time, and stated his case well. I pretended to take the other side, just to needle him a little.
As a white guy I can’t imagine taking a stand on that issue at work. Not in today’s nanny-state, best to just dummy-up and stay quiet.
November 24, 2011 at 10:28 PM in reply to: Health Care: What do you think about Walmart’s(etc) smokers and fat tax for workers #733408CardiffBaseballParticipantHow is fat defined? This chick at work, isn’t bad looking for her age, very pretty colored eyes, with the three-tone hair, yet sort of looks deathly. Sunken face, dark circles etc. Legs so skinny it’s a bit gross. Yet she has this little belly on her and hips sort of jut out much more than her skinny frame would indicate. Clear case of skinny-fat which is typical of someone likely born to be skinny, but doesn’t engage in vigorous weight-born exercise, and probably does nothing or just something aerobic/yoga/pilates etc. On their otherwise tiny frame, there is clearly some fat. (anecdotally speaking I see this odd-shape more in poor rural areas, than I do a pretty-classy lady like this)
Brian if you saw her at one of your cultural events (she seems the type) you’d probably approve, but I hear the skinny-fat types have just as many health issues as the mildly obese, and that they are at just as much of a risk for heart disease. I realize you do not frequent sites where trainers who like clients to move iron around bitch about skinny-fat, but it seems to be a trending term these days.
Under Brian’s suggestion it wouldn’t matter if she was a healthy skinny-fat and didn’t use services she’d get a rebate. Under the typical plan some bureaucrat with a dumb-ass formula for BMI gets to pick and choose and even if she were an un-healthy skinny-fat, she’d pass the BMI eye test.
CardiffBaseballParticipantI like my Roku2, but it’s clearly dependent on needs. For us, the I prefer the Roku2 Netflix experience as well as MLB.TV but I did take a look at the Apple on the review sites.
Some have vastly different needs, for instance I don’t use iTunes much as I have Android phones, but if you are in any way using Apple products, I would think AppleTV might be a better fit. I do have a couple of ipods laying around but they are collecting dust. I need to get back on itunes and start downloading podcasts again.
CardiffBaseballParticipant
Anybody tried or know much about p90x? I’ve always been skeptical about stuff like “muscle confusion.” It always seems like a gimmick to sell something. But a guy at work did it and he swears by it. He’s been running 30-40 miles a week for years (still does) and still, he says the p90x transformed him.
Kind of opposite of the direction Walter is going. More of an aerobic type burn rather that getting strong.
CardiffBaseballParticipant
the internet seems to believe that the Squat is the King of exercises, with the deadlift a close second
Depends on your goals really. Nothing wrong with squats they are great but you really need to do them in a Power Rack so that you can drop without killing yourself. Deads at 95% of max are much better for sprinters or runners.
CardiffBaseballParticipantand I didn’t mean to come off anti-squat, by all means mix that in. I just meant that if you only had time for one exercise with weights, the deadlift I find to be more user friendly, and have more overall benefit.
As I mentioned deep squats enable me to go from about an ankle high toe touch to palms flat on ground with no stretching.
CardiffBaseballParticipantI walk the dog everyday and that little bugger wants to run, so I get good anaerobic with fast walk mixed with running over a 45 minute or so period. Great stuff really and for a 40+ guy walking is very good for you. Less punishment on the joints and you still get a bang for the buck.
Deadlift – I have a few extra bucks and decided to spend it on equipment rather than gym fees. So I purchased “bumper weights” which is a fancy term for a specialty weight that you can drop on a concrete surface, although we have a horse stall mat to cushion the blow to the garage floor. So the point is I do not lower the weight. I bring the weight a few inches past the knee and drop it.
Remember that we are doing this to get my son’s sprint time to an MLB level. So the expression of power in the hamstrings/glutes etc. is finished once the weight is up past your knees. For anyone interested Google Barry Ross and Allyson Felix, it’s pretty interesting stuff but they try to get their trainees to deadlift 3X body weight.
Now does the avg. person need to deadlift? Maybe not but if you are fortunate and can do it safely (especially the way we do it) it’s pretty harmless. If you start doing high rep stuff where you do touch and go with regular iron… Yep recipe for trouble.
Squat – Perfectly good exercise but not quite as good for sprint speed which is our goal. (mostly because it’s using push rather than pull and happens too slowly). My anecdotal experience is this. As a youth athlete I could not touch my toes, nor as a member of the armed forces. Didn’t matter as I could do great things with a ball, excellent vision/awareness etc. Flexibility to touch toes apparently didn’t matter. Enter the ass-to-grass squat when I was older (35?). Suddenly I could touch my toes and put my palms on the ground flat. Mainly because you are trying to touch your ass to your ankles before exploding up, and over time that just loosened me up.
Yoga – There are many well paid trainers these days who do not preach stretching and say overdoing it will hurt. Watch a typical HS football team warmup today before a game. No longer are they laid out doing hurdler stretches. Now a days warming up before a game is about joint mobility and range of motion. High skips, over unders, high knees, arm circles, Karaoke’s. When we were kids it seems like it was 3-4 ways to stretch a hamstring before every game. Not so much today.
This is a hotly contested area and Pavel Tsatsouline and others basically say this. If you want to stretch, stretch. They just prefer you do most of the stretching after your activity. So deadlift, or squat or walk or whatever and do your stretching after you are finished while the heart is elevated.
WW/Scaredy inspired me I am thinking of taking on a Kettlebell swing challenge up to the new year. Should get me back into the swing of things, to start deadlifting. I have 35-44-55 and 75 pound kettlebells to let me work my way up. Just need to figure out a reasonable goal.
