OT – Burqa ban moves forward in France

I’m an unabashed liberal, but I wholeheartedly support this legislation. Why don’t Muslim immigrants try harder to respect the native culture of the land they move to as much as they request that their religious and cultural practices be respected? I hope I don’t sound like I’m bashing the entire nation of Islam, a vast and diverse population. I’m all for freedom of religion, but it seems that many (not all) Muslims migrating to the west have no intention of adapting to the culture of their adopted homeland.

In the UK, Islamic Law has been officially adopted in civil cases. What happened to the notion of immigrants integrating themselves into the culture of the land they move to? Yes many minority immigrants establish ethnic enclaves (Chinatowns, Little Italy’s etc.) IMO, these enclaves have served as a bridge for immigrants to adapt and integrate into a new culture. There seems to be a lot less of that sentiment amongst Muslim immigrants to the west.

EDIT: If there are any Muslims, specifically Muslim immigrants, on this board I’d really like to hear from you. The few Muslims that I do know are effectively ‘non-practicing’; although raised in a Muslim household, they’re pretty Americanized.

If I go to saudi arabia I can’t drink, among many other things, and women are ‘encouraged’ to dress appropriately and wear head coverings. You are in their country so you respect their traditions even though you may think they are silly and backwards.

However, when they come to western countries they immediately expect us to change our customs and laws to conform to their cultural norms. Huh?!

France is learning a tough lesson. Their decades of welcoming all these people with open arms is crushing their country. We’d be wise to learn a few lessons from their experience.

If people want to wear it, it doesn’t affect me. Let them be.

I think that the Kaffiyeh for men like in Lawrence of Arabia is not a bad idea, especially if you have to be out in the sun for extended periods of time. It’s a great sunscreen that keeps you cool too.

Unless they insist on wearing it when their driver’s license picture is taken…with everything except the eyes covered. It’s already happened here.

My bank makes me take off my hat and sunglasses when I come through the front door so they can recognize me if I try and rob the place. Why should someone wearing a burqa be treated differently?
