“No, not all women in America are blonde with big plastic boobs. No, not every American owns a gun. No, we don’t all watch baseball. No, we don’t still call black people ni***rs.”
I have friends who when they came to America for the first time were surprised how few white people there were. Of course, they only visited the big cities.
In California, they were surprised to see the low-rise buildings and urban sprawl. They thought it was quaint and kind of rural. Not worthy of a modern country.
To them America should be New York City, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Miami with a Hollywood cast. Through in a baseball field somewhere in Iowa and some cowboys in Dallas.

We are, after all, the land of the free, right?
I do think that in many ways America is the land of the free.
We can live in big urban centers if we wish.
Cars are cheap and you can get a driver license for $20 after your dad teaches you how to drive around the block. Car insurance is cheap too.
It’s easy to get a flying license. Just pay money for the classes.
You can own a large suburban house and have some dogs and still commute to your city job. If you want, you can move further out and own a ranch with horses, even your own plane and airstrip if you have more money.
You can buy guns at Walmart. Of course, you can buy all your other household stuff at Walmart for cheap.
You can buy cheap furniture and appliances and haul them back home yourself in your own truck.
All these things are luxuries in Europe. But they have been normal fixtures of middle class life in America for decades.

February 19, 2010 at 11:23 AM #515127AKParticipantEurope is not the Promised Land. Europeans can be intolerant, violent, ignorant, insular, selfish, etc., just like anyone else. I’ve met my share of racist European liberals. I’ve met European Joe-the-Plumber types who complain about their tax dollars going to lazy welfare bums.
Doctors Without Borders runs free clinics and other services in many European welfare states … Spain and Italy, but also Belgium and even SWEDEN. Yes, even Sweden. The clinics serve illegal immigrants, who risk deportation if they use government hospitals.
And I’m all about double-action revolvers. Just took my S&W Model 19 to the range after a 14-year hiatus. Still just as smooth as the day I bought it. Accurate and powerful enough to please the firearms conoisseur, yet simple enough that a n00b can learn to handle it in an hour. Try that with a typical high-capacity Wundergun. “This is the safety. Well, actually the thumb safety. No, that’s the slide release. And that’s the takedown lever. Well, that’s the decocking lever. No wait, you just activated the magazine safety. And that? It’s the trigg… BOOM!” π
