ParticipantIn Germany, there is a word “Konsumverzicht” abstinence from consumption.
Has somewhat of a religious tone to it.
I find I’m better off if I only buy things after I’ve thought about it say 10 times.
Then I know I’ll really use the item.
Now “how to convert my wife to this mindset?”.

ParticipantIf you become an Uber driver, you can lease a Ford Mach-e for $85 per week (includes 250 miles) plus 20 cents per mile over that.
the Mach-e has good reviews and I think about a 260 mile range.
You will need to do a certain number of Uber rides per month, probably about 50 which can take about 15 hours or 4-5 hours per week and can be done during the commute while using destination filter.
The rides should more or less pay for the car.
if you want to use my referral code, please send me a message for the sign on bonus.
Hope I’m not abusing Piggington terms by putting this out there.

ParticipantInformal Uber rider survey
Of my roughly 800 passengers since May, only one person talked about leaving SD. Several new arrivals from New York (very giddy) and from the Bay Areas.
Woman wanted to leave was from Florida working at a bar in PB and complained about her tips being too low as a “drink server” saying all the tips went to the bar tenders.
Even recent grads working for $23 at Starbucks are staying in spite of not finding careers in their field of study “who know a psychology major only gets $16/hour starting pay”. The price of following one’s “passion”. She mentioned stickiness of family business/customers etc.
Meanwhile, more riders from Apple, Biotech, accounting firms, fair number from Ukraine, occasional from Russia as well (sometimes living higher end)/sometimes desperate.
I almost wish EconProf would change his name as my dad was an economics professor.
There’s a reason it’s called “the dismal science” harking back to Malthus and the looming shortages caused by overpopulation.
Most of us have the benefit of accidental “humility” by not bestowing titles on ourselves in our profiles.
I guess I could call myself CPA/MBA/Multilingual but that may imply competence beyond the scope of the pertinent discussion.
Needless to say, almost all out of towners make mental plans to come back and or move here once they have visited.
Did hear about some Ukrainians going back to fight but they were from Folsom and worked at a truck plant up there, maybe some left San Diego too.

Participant
Yeah for property values in RB, 4S Ranch, Del Sur, Poway, Escondido, PQ, Torrey Highlands, Carmel Valley! Although I fear the traffic.
I never like to say one single factor could cause a market to stabilize but this Apple coming to San Diego could be the key factor in ensuring prices stabilize in the coming years.
As this is a strategic decision by Apple, their own in-house analysis must see the relative value of San Diego vs the Bay Area as a long term play.
I don’t recall many near half billion investments in property in San Diego office space/campuses in the past decade.

Interesting to hear you say that. Around Carmel Valley, people are talking about the fact that enrollment is dropping at the local schools because this is NOT happening. People moved to the area with their kids back in the 2000’s and not leaving now that their kids are college aged or older.
Is enrollment really dropping? If so, not sure why they are opening a new elementary school near PTMS and CCA.
Poway USD is seeing drops (at least projected) and no longer has as much construction planned, this is in turn cutting years off Mello Roos. In some cases over 10 years less,

ParticipantAppreciate these updates, I gave a ride to a Google employee who works at the facility off MM. She mentioned they are expanding.
There are quite a few Apple employees in my building in UTC so hard to see MM area softening any time soon.
Nice and steady is good.

They are paying an arm an a leg for something slightly smaller than my old house in Pac. Heights and then on top of that has to send both their kids to private schools because most public schools suck in the city. The amount they spend on private K-12 will be on the order of how much people would be spending sending them to a private college on the east coast.
I guess it could be worse. At least they don’t live in NYC anymore. What an armpit.Makes no sense.
Was out ubering a few days ago, picked up a SF transplant, he and his spouse paid $5700/month in San Francisco for $700 sf, now live in Santaluz, probably a $2.5M house.
As he has roots here and has been back two years, he was bemoaning all the other Bay Area people coming in. Apparently, there is still a wave incoming as prices are still so much higher and they come see SD, and never want to go back.
I have to admit, escoguy….
It is so fvcking awesome you Uber drive…. Most of the people who you pick up don’t even know how well off you are.I swear, you should consider doing a “Cash Cab” like game show.
Can I trade free DIY auto repair/service with free rides to the airport?? :)
My wife thinks I’m crazy to Uber in a Model S, but passengers do get kicks out of it.
A dad took a selfie with his son in front of the car Sunday, they were so excited.
Another guy did a video call with his son in Cozumel to show the car.One can learn a lot from passengers, they share so much about their lives and probably 95% are great. Occasionally, a few can be a touch pretentious.
I’d like to think it helps me refine my people skills and keeps me grounded.
Have to admit, after not being out there during the pandemic, it’s nice to be out driving again and seeing the vibe of San Diego, really so much to do here.Oddly, I’ve managed to get to know a few neighbors this way, within half an hour had a family of Russian refugees coming from TJ, then a group coming from a wedding in Rancho Santa Fe. Kind of wakes you up to what is going on around us.
As far as money, no I don’t bring that up, if so in indirect terms about appreciating things in life. Some people need a little direction and really listen. It’s odd but one can have an impact in unexpected places.
One of my college buddies son’s got married at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe on Sunday. I think the brides family might live here. A bunch of friends came in for it this weekend. If it was any of them Id guess you had a car full of very nice folks. I actually had another college buddy in town to entertain. We thought about popping in to say hi but were busy with plans ourselves
This particular trip was last weekend but still shows how small this world is if we just get out and explore. Yes, they were nice, I actually find most passengers are good, it midly restores faith in human decency, given, I don’t see a full spectrum.

Awesome. What are my chances of Ubering in a Miata?
I can give a lot of directions in life too…
Late apex, trail braking, rev matching…
Oh wait, I can only take one passenger, 6’2″ or under, comfortably….
But wait a minute….
…”Honey, I need a 2+2 seat 911s for my Uber business…”
That might work…Can you select how many passengers you can take?
About 90% of the time it’s 2 or less. Groups of four are usually shorter trips.
You can in theory decline but don’t want to do it too often. Here is my invite code: https://www.uber.com/us/en/s/d/join/?invite_code=tt6sga4sg2tu

Participant
Esco, I don’t know if SF city is even higher than SD now.
Spend 10 minutes browsing Zillow, they seem about the same now for condos.
Us going up 50-70% when SF is flat will do that.
SF outperformed us in the prior 2010-2017 period however.
I also spent a few minutes looking Manhattan. Lots of co-op listings below 2017-2018 prior sale prices. Some down 25% from prior sales. I was just randomly browsing the 1 to 1.5 submarket. Giant inventory too.
Fair enough, my mind typically holds the data point and extrapolates to today as constant which reminds me to calibrate my thoughts.
You may well be right that things have softened as well they should have in SF.May 31, 2022 at 7:10 PM in reply to: SF city RE prices down to 2017 prices due to crime wave and WFH #825804Escoguy

LoL, F-NO!
I could go for a quick phased in approach.
A very basic heated structure, which is easily cleaned for a 1-3 week detox.
Move to progressively better/more privacy as milestones are met.Conditional can work for some and completely unconditional isn’t workable for the facility and staff, but key concepts from both might come together.

Participant
God I hate to sound like my right wing friends when they say this but freedom isn’t free! You enjoy the safety and structure of this great country yet you want it to be like more socialistic European countries that don’t have what we have here. Somebody’s got to work and pay the bills and by your own admission you never really have. People go to work. Freedom isn’t free
You’re probably just in the sane middle.
Moderate doesn’t mean indecisive or unprincipled.
Sometimes a moderate who reflects on all facts has a stronger rational foundation, seeing society from multiple perspectives simultaneously, finding a workable solution that creates the best outcome for all with normal compromises.
