As well probably for 80% of all Americans, this has more than enough range for daily driving use right now but they will keep improving this technology.
Although current EV is sufficient for 80% of American in term of range, it’s definitely not sufficient in term of cost/range and longevity. Even the cheaper Tesla is only shooting for 200 miles range under ideal scenario. That definitely would be only sufficient for a 2nd car. No way you can make a road trip w/ it. You probably can’t even make it to LA and back under real life condition without need to charge.

No argument here that they need to do a LOT of work. And I’m not saying that this will be overnight. I tend to think a decade or so out.
Also, I’ve found that products just cause us to change our daily routine as well. If you told me 20 years ago that I couldn’t make it a full day without charging my cellphone I would have laughed at you. LOL.
Anyway, I know at least in my case, we’ll switch over to all non-ICE’s as soon as I can.
September 21, 2013 at 6:37 PM #765716earlyretirementParticipantNEVER in my life did I ever think I’d reserve/order a car without test driving it! Well, I guess there is a first time for everything.
Just put down my deposit for the Model X. It doesn’t come out until late 2014 which probably means early 2015 but can’t wait.

October 2, 2013 at 2:05 PM #766069The-ShovelerParticipantI really like the Tesla Biz model, but unless pure EV come down in price considerably I think the Hybrid will dominate as they are dropping in price fast in comparison to pure EV’s.
IMO I see 3-5 dollar Gas available for a very long time.
And diesel hybrids will start to hit the market big time in the next few years.
when your getting 50-75 miles a gallon, 5 dollar gas does not look so expensive if the car is half the price.
October 2, 2013 at 2:24 PM #766075FlyerInHiGuestTesla is a high end car so few can afford them
I wish them all the success in the world. They are aspirational cars that are changing the direction of the market. It’s now cool to drive a hybrid or EV.Do kids want teslas of hummers when they grow up?
October 2, 2013 at 3:02 PM #766077The-ShovelerParticipantIf the live in the burb’s probably both,
diesel hybrid truck and a EV to just run around.
I don’t see the majority being condo owners for a long time.

Tesla shares fall after mysterious car fire and analyst downgrade
All snark aside, still great looking technology even if the Media is more infatuated with it than Apple and Jobs.

Thank goodness someone noticed that the company isn’t flawless. I was getting killed on a call spread. Just need it to drop another $20.

I agree. I don’t see myself spending $100k on a car… The article I linked says they’re planning a ‘gen 3’ which will be around $35k around 2017.October 3, 2013 at 8:15 AM #766107no_such_realityParticipant
Interesting article about GM studying Tesla… both the car and the business paradigm.

You had me excited there for a moment UCGal. Then I saw it’s GM that’s thinking Gen3 and building a $30-$35K volt. I know GM, $35K means $45K and it’s still a glorified Chevy Cavalier.

Time to get excited again. Here’s the quote from the article:Tesla is not standing still. It plans to add the Model X, a crossover derivative of the Model S, in late 2014. And in early 2017, it expects to unveil the first of its so-called Gen 3 models, a new family of battery-powered compacts with a range of 200-plus miles and priced from around $35,000.
I read that as TESLA is introducing a Gen 3 in 2017 that will be around $35k.
The Volt is already out and sells for about $35k. So this would be direct competition with the volt.
And I can’t imagine it would be uglier than the volt. (Which IMO is too ugly to ever own.)
