That said, if you’re a software guy working in a chip company, it’s been a nice long, fun, run these past couple of years. Get out, now. You are now considered overhead. And with each chip company penny pinching while going after those slim margins that keep getting slimmer in Asia (particularly china), it’s not going to end well for you if you stay in the chip industry as a software engineer.
We were considered overhead 6 years ago when they started cutting our contracts 😉

I can tell you having had to interview a lot of people in my current position that the flood of resumes that are showing up in hiring managers inboxes are for mostly H1b individuals who have pretty low skill levels.
I’ve given a customized variant of FizzBuzz to some of these engineers with 10-15 years of “experience” and the result was something I would have given an F to if it was submitted by a freshman CS student. I’d say that maybe 1 in 10 is worth even bothering with a phone screen.
meadandaleParticipantThey provide you both numbers, DC and AC-CEC.
meadandaleParticipantBased on what I’ve read and after discussing this issue with a solar project manager, net metering is going to run out by the end of this year which means that the window to get a project complete before it does is quickly closing. Most contractors have a 2-3 month delay if you were to sign the contract today. The project has to be ONLINE by the deadline in order to qualify.

I’m amazed at the caliber of the people we are getting in our interviews. We started having them complete a coding test (that should take about 20 minutes) and the quality is about what I used to see as a TA for first quarter java students.
I’d say we are rejecting about 9 of 10 people we talk to outright via the phone screen or coding test.
meadandaleParticipant

$45? Expensive?
I prefer Lagavulin to Laphroig and it’s almost 2x the price. Talk about expensive.
Mead: Have you checked out Trader Joes? They have an impressive selection of single malts and their prices are pretty reasonable.
Also, Costco had a screaming deal on Lagavulin 16yo over the holidays. $56 a bottle (versus $85 in the stores).
They also had a Kirkland brand 20yo Speyside for $44.99, and it was excellent.
I did happen to get in on the Costco deal…I got 4 bottles of Lagavulin…and 4 bottles of Pyrat rum, which was also on sale. Haven’t checked out single malts at Trader Joe’s…I’ll put that on my list. I have bought several of the kirkland scotches in the past and they’ve always been good. They had a 25YO a few years ago that was $70 and was actually Macallan…at half the price of Macallan.

meadandaleParticipant

Spin class … bleeeeeech. I’d rather do the real thing, meaning an actually bike on roads or trails.
Sure on the road where you can coast. No coasting on these spin bikes.
I agree that it is boring….and not at all necessary….I have taken the one hour class exactly once. I went 30 miles.
No way you did 30 miles in an hour…
You can coast, you just let the flywheel pull your legs around.
As a roadie who logs about 200 miles/week and has done spin classes I can tell you that the classes are hard but they are not like riding a real bike and the class does little to get you in shape for real riding. But they are a nice diversion in the winter when the weather is bad and the days are short and it is hard to get out on a real bike.
There’s no way you do 200 miles a week.
I’m sure this is trolling…but I typically ride 6 days/wk. 30-35 miles for 4 of those and then 40-50 mile rides on sat/sun.

March 20, 2013 at 2:31 PM in reply to: I’m now officially Small Government on Police Funding #760775meadandaleParticipant
How about the city actually using their police properly, as crime-fighters rather than revenue agent thugs?
They are more than happy to give out tickets, yet when my friend’s house in PB was robbed, they didn’t even bother to come the same day and take a report.
Problem is that if you fire even 25% without a change in management, there will be just as many revenue collectors, but even fewer who’ll care about serious crimes. Hang the chief and top management out to dry, THEN begin the cuts of rank-and-file.
I had my bike stolen out of my garage last september in Grantville. The police showed up quickly enough and took a report but they basically didn’t do ANYTHING on the case. Last month the bike showed up on Craigs List. I called the detective assigned to the case and he told me that they wouldn’t do anything.
They’re basically telling criminals that they can steal with impunity because they will do nothing to stop or solve property crimes.
meadandaleParticipant
And we can safely retire TCP/IP since that Soviet nukilar attack is not very likely anymore.
As you write this I’m having internet troubles. Been having latency issues and widely swinging networks speeds all day.
So, I think it’s safe to say we still need TCP/IP..not to deal with nukes but to deal with crappy chinese and tawainese routers and hung over telecom workers driving back hoes.
meadandaleParticipant
we may still be better off letting them discharge this debt.
we let corporations discharge debt in Chapter 11 and businesses are utterly ruthless, why do we put the dog on people who marry, have kids, etc..
If there is fraud, go after them, but, the system is awash in debt, that has to end.
Businesses rarely get capital (loans) unless they have assets, have pitched a concept to a VC for funding or have some kind of track record of success.
Try walking into a bank as a new corporation and trying to borrow an hundred grand. Ain’t gonna happen without them wanting a lot more information. If they aren’t happy with the answers forget it.
I’m all for applying the same requirements to students: you want to borrow a hundred grand for school? What are you going to study? What is the job market like for people with your degree? How do you plan on paying back the money? If the bank likes the answers and agrees with the risk and then the student defaults down the road because things didn’t quite work out like everyone thought then it would be more aligned with your theory.
January 27, 2013 at 9:22 AM in reply to: The Phil Mickelson Effect and California: Taxed to the MAX!!! #758580meadandaleParticipant
He’s overstated his tax rate by at least 10%. He doesn’t pay anywhere near 62 or 63% as he claimed. It can’t be anymore than 52%.
Top Fed Rate (39.6) + Top CA Rate (12.3) + Full Fica + New surcharge (15.3 + 0.9) = 68.1%
Since he makes most of his money above the margin where these rates kick in most of his money is taxed at the full rates.
meadandaleParticipantI’ve heard the liability insurance canard floated before and it’s just silly.
What you’re suggesting is a victim’s fund that law abiding gun owners who have never harmed and will never harm anyone would be force to pay. This doesn’t meet the definition of ‘insurance’.
