Participant

I am a little torn on this issue. I don’t think the UC schools have ever been merit-based only wrt their admission policy.
I believe the UC schools still deploying the 60:40 ratio for freshman admissions. That is, 60% of the available spots are to be used to admit incoming freshmen based strictly on academics only. And the other 40% is when the schools would take into account the student’s extra-curricula activities, economic background, etc. If this is still the case then it begs the question – is it fair if, all things being equal, a student got admitted because they came from a “poor” family over a student that came from a “wealthy” family? If the schools have been using the financial background and one of the metrics for admission then how different is it if they were to add race to category? I guess in this case if you’re rich and Asian/White then you’re doubly screwed. That said, I’ve always told my kids to make sure that just make sure that they make the grades to ensure that they are the 60 percenter and take the decision making out of the hands of the schools.
Classic “if my kid makes the extreme cut”, then injustice doesn’t matter for the rest of them there were otherwise qualified…
Bull. Where did I say that injustices does not matter? Unfortunately, the injustices have always been there before and that didn’t bother or matter to you, did it? Right, because the injustice didn’t affect you or your kid one iota. But now the things change a bit and you’re bitching and all this self-righteousness bull.
Back to the point – do you think it is fair that a kid is picked over another just because their economic backgrounds are different? That’s what been going on for years. How is using the social-economic background as a selection criteria different than any other criteria (for those who are not in the top 60%)? You’re trying to paint a picture where the California Univ are doing away with the merit system altogether. I happen to think that’s not the case. If you truly believe it should be based on merit then make sure your kid is a 60 percenter or go fight the system to drop the 60:40 admission policy altogether.

Participant
Sell the house, get another one where the neighborhood isn’t poisoned by an HOA and the officious Stasi-informant types working for it.
This actually is not that bad an idea. One really have to decide whether or not this is the kind of people you want to have as your next door neighbors.

Participant
We then called the HOA and asked when do we need to get an approval. They said anything that is visible from the Common Area will need an approval. Our backyard is not visible from the street or common area. The only one who can see it is our next door neighbor.
If this is indeed the case then stand firm. Write to the HOA and let them know that you’re not violating the rules and that if they believe otherwise then they’re welcome to come out to your home and explain/point out exactly what and how the playhouse violate the CC&Rs.
The way I have always dealt with HOA is by shifting the burden of proof to them.

ParticipantJust want to bring this up since there’s been lots of discussions of the scumbags
and
And little no or no mention of the heroes that put their own safety at risk in shielding Lien from further beating

Edit: The link posted above by outtamojo did mention one of the two gentlemen who came to Lien’s rescue. Sergio Consuegra – much respect to you.

ParticipantNew twist to this incident. According to MSNBC there was and undercover cop “on the scene when a pack of angry motorcycle riders chased down and beat a Range Rover driver….There is no evidence the officer took part in the assault on driver Alexian Lien, but he also did not assist the victim or call 911”
It’ll be interesting to see how this will unfold regarding this “undercover cop”.

As to the biker who was hurt and who will probably never walk again, I do have some sympathy. It’s not clear if he was involved in the beating — what if he was just along for the ride, so to speak.
Good point. But if you watch the video, there were a few that did the sensible thing and pulled to the side of the road. May be he was too eager to help his fallen compatriot that he disregard his own safety.

Participant
Flu- I don’t think the local media has much sympathy for those thugs.
Based on what I have read and seen, totally agree. I am curious what the long-term repercussion is going to be. Are people going to be less patient and tolerant with these flashmob-on-wheels in the future?

I’m sick of asians getting their ass kicked when it comes to social issues.
Unfortunately, the reality is it’s not an “Asian” issue unless it’s involved a certain ethnic groups within the Asian community.

Participant
If you run over someone, can you imagine a mob pursuing you and beating you up?
…and if your fellow thug caused an accident by brake-checking someone and then swarming at the individual with hostility, can you imagine what the driver of the vehicle would do in that situation? It’s too bad Lien didn’t use the RR to its full potential.

I hate fvcking liberals… now even more so with a passion…
I must have missed something here. What is the “liberal” side of this?
SK, you wouldn’t know what flu is talking about unless you, too had been brainwashed by the right-wing noise machine. Or at least were familiar with their tactics. All liberals are pansies, crybabies, victims, freeloaders, and bleeding-heart (god forbid anybody should be concerned about anybody but themselves) losers. And all pansies, crybabies, victims, freeloaders, and bleeding-heart losers are liberals. Apparently even biker gangs.
fuck you.. Sit in the middle of a riot zone like during the LA riots like I did and have your life seriously threatened, and let’s see if you still think punks that want to kill you and your family “are victims”….
These bikers are just “average people who like to ride their bikes”
….without a license plate
….on side walks
….brake-checking in front of moving vehicles
