ParticipantLow interest rates have a lot to do with the high prices. Prices seem steep if you’re looking at prices and prices only. As a home buyer, I think it’s more important as to what your monthly payment is going to be vs. the (crazy) prices that the market is dictating. Assuming a 20% down payment, and you’ll have to cough up a little more up front, monthly payment for a $450K house at 3.5% interest rate is ~ a $300K at 7.0%.

Participant
IBM to cut 26% of its work force or approx.100,000 employees.
I believe the layoffs is going to be sizable but doubt it will be anywhere near the 26% figure. Losing 1/4 of your workforce could cripple the company – regardless of the company’s or the individual’s performance (or lack thereof).

Participant
BG, I don’t think you’ve been to San Gabriel lately. The area is heavily Chinese now and prices are more than San Diego for comparable inland areas.
You are correct – it’s not just San Gabriel but the whole San Gabriel Valley(San Gabriel, San Marino, Rosemead, Monterey Park, etc…) have seen the influx of Asians (not just Chinese) since as early as the 80’s. I am sure some folks on this forum have seen this video:

And I also believe that race is not the issue in either of these cases. IMO, if you changed their race to white, but kept all other variables (size, behavior, etc.) the same, these cases would have ended the same way.
Pure speculation. Maybe if Eric Garner was white, the police would have patted him on the back for a job well done of helping breaking up a fight instead of killing him for selling loose cigarettes.

Also Vinson seems to be almost there too…
Good news.
Yes, very good news. Less frightening to know that 1rst world medical care can make this level of virus less of a death sentence.
Is she really cured and ebola-free? Or is she now a carrier of the virus that still can be transmitted to others (a la HIV)?

Participant
Total worldwide infection is around 9000, total deaths are around 4400 with Ebola outbreak running since March of this year.
Need to take into account, up until a few weeks ago, almost all ebola cases were confined to remote villages in Africa.

ParticipantThe nasdaq is getting close to “correction” territory. Down close to 8% since Sep 2. Let’s hope corporate earnings won’t be a stinker.

Ebola is likely to be more easily transmitted than we’re led to believe.

Participanta question for the investors/gamblers on this board. If you have $10k to invest in either tesla motors or alibaba which stock would you buy?

Participantbaba’s profit margin is insane and somewhat unbelievable and most definitely unsustainable at almost 50%. I like baba as a company but not as a stock at the current valuation.
I like amzn and what bezos has been trying to do – he’s constantly looking to innovate to help expand amazon’s footprint. bezos is very much a visioneer as steve jobs was.

Participant

is this guy just a weird deviant as the department says or is this indicative of a general frame of mind some other cops patrol in…
“I’m a cop. If you don’t want to get hurt, don’t challenge me”
This came from a former cop who’s a “professor” of homeland security.
I believe the professor says that avoiding confrontation with police is the “realistic” way to not get hurt. But he goes on to say that police should use other means to diffuse tense situations, and that he’s with the ACLU.
I am not not sure what exactly this “professor” was trying to convey. Especially in one paragraph he wrote:
“if you don’t want to get shot, tased, pepper-sprayed, struck with a baton or thrown to the ground, just do what I tell you. Don’t argue with me…”
and a couple paragraphs down:
“And you don’t have to submit to an illegal stop or search. You can refuse consent to search your car or home if there’s no warrant (though a pat-down is still allowed if there is cause for suspicion). Always ask the officer whether you are under detention or are free to leave. Unless the officer has a legal basis to stop and search you, he or she must let you go.”
