ParticipantHere’s one “professional” opinion on the developments today:
“People are using China as the main thing and as an excuse for selling,” said Keith Bliss, senior vice-president at Cuttone & Co in New York.”
“A lot of people know this is way overdone. They are just waiting and they are going to step back in next week.”
We’ve been out of the market for awhile, and our highly speculative film investments have actually proven to be more predictable than the market–go figure.
It will definitely be interesting to see how all of this plays out over time.

ParticipantIt’s true there are a lot of “loopholes” in CA laws that do benefit families who purchased property here over the past decades as our family has.
Imo, anyone, given the opportunity, would take advantage of these legal rights. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if there are changes in the future.

ParticipantIt’s true that life is a fluid experience, and many things can and do change between the planning phase and execution, but, imo, looking at the stats, the trend of telling kids success is a slam dunk seems nothing short of delusional.
Although we encouraged and supported our kids in everything they did, as they got older, we always leveled with them about what it was going to take for them to get where they wanted to be–especially in the highly competitive fields they chose.
Now, in retrospect, I believe the fact that they took nothing for granted along the way might have been a key factor in helping them attain their ultimate goals.

ParticipantI realize the OP was simply a question about a birthday gift, but it reminded me of the many conversations friends and family have had about this topic over the years.
It’s interesting that raising “Super Kids” was a hot topic even when my parents were raising us, and when we were raising our kids–even though the concept was previously referred to as raising “Exceptional Children.”
Attempting to micromanage your children’s destiny is more in vogue now than ever, but I can tell you from what we’ve seen with our kids as well as their friends who are successful, the real winners, regardless of IQ and other cultivated abilities, have turned out to be those who have best learned to cope with the realities of life outside of the nest.
Having read that only around 10% of kids today are actually achieving their desired goals after college, makes it clear that the variables that contribute to creating a successful child may be quite different from common perceptions.

ParticipantBG, when you’re ready, I’m sure opportunities will present themselves. Know you’ve probably thought of this also, but I’d definitely make sure you really want to give up San Diego before you make your final decision.
We’ve known quite a few people who left for “greener pastures,” and later wished they had their SAN home back, and I certainly wouldn’t want to see this happen to you.

ParticipantDel Mar beach was around 89 today.
Agree most coastal communities did not have AC when my wife and I were growing up in LJ, but many of us have installed it since. Even though we don’t use it much at our house in RSF–we do enjoy having it for the few times a year we may need it–especially when it’s hot and humid.

ParticipantThe many members of our extended family who live from SFO all the way up to Santa Rosa, and south, to the Half Moon Bay area, as BG mentioned, have all have been watching this show for years.
The general area has always been a desirable place to live, but, as we all know, the tech boom has definitely fueled a new level of real estate insanity.
It’s a very difficult situation for many people who simply want to work or retire there. At this point, there is no indication things will change in the near future, and I understand their concerns not only for themselves, but for their children.
Personally, we prefer SoCal over the Bay Area for many reasons, even on days like this when the temp at the beach is 89 degrees.

ParticipantWill stick with SoCal near the beach until the end, with a touch of here and there around the globe now and then.

ParticipantI’ve heard from friends who are agents in various areas that things have slowed down, so what you are experiencing seems fairly typical for this time of year.
As has been said, many people are renting now who did not buy in their desired location during the last downturn, so you might want to continue renting out your property until the next peak selling season comes around.

ParticipantIn the world of CA real estate anything can happen. Imo, the only real answer is to make sure you’ve positioned yourself so the fluctuations really don’t matter one way or the other.

Participant+1. Glad we have some regs in place that help prevent a repeat of handing property to completely unqualified individuals again.
That’s not to say there will never be problems or corrections again, or that lowering credit scores won’t cause issues, but these few safeguards should help to some degree.

ParticipantWe’ve tried the boating life. We enjoy boating around CA, along with more extended trips–Bahamas, etc. Even made a trip with friends from Lauderdale to Italy.
They had an experienced Captain at the helm of a 110 foot yacht, and it was a great experience, but we just don’t seem to have the desire to make it a permanent way of life. For those who do–Enjoy!

ParticipantCould be, sp. That’s the way they marketed The Crosby from Day 1, even though it’s not in RSF. Guess they had their reasons.
