ParticipantBrian like many things in life you have these odd preconceived notions that are just bizarre.
1. The greatest athletes in the US in terms of measureables that measure speed, strength, agility, vertical leap, etc. are football players. Specifically the positions of running back and defensive back are loaded with freaks of nature. They aren’t fat.
2. Linebackers – really strong guys who can run sub 4.5 40 yard dashes. Not fat.
3. Wide receivers – these days MAJOR freaks of nature. 6’5″ guys with 40 inch vertical leaps and can twist their bodies in the air with the grace of a gymnast. They stop on a dime, change direction and leap over guys in an instant. not fat.
4. Safeties – See WRs. Not quite as tall but guys who are almost as fast as anyone on the field, bench press 450, and blow you up when given the chance. not fat.Every single athletic endeavor you could possibly undertake would be enhanced dramatically if you could deadlift 3X body weight. Gymnastics, Distance running, triathalons etc.
Nobody cares if you didn’t play football but that doesn’t mean you need to knock football players. Neither of my kids are playing and they are big-ass kids but both are more like D-1 baseball whereas in football maybe D-3 if they are lucky. Actually my oldest might play his Sr. year, we shall see. My point is I am not a football dad, but I would never ever make the mistake of poo-pooing football players to trump up soccer players. I am a baseball dad and do not think baseball players are more athletic for one minute. Soccer is fine in it’s own right, and more often than not a display of aerobic capacity and skill, rather than a great measure of athleticism. There are less freaks of nature in soccer as it pertains to athletic measurables, rather most great soccer players are simply phenoms with their feet, reaction time, stop and start quickness, and depth perception/vision etc.
We have some baseball players who come over after soccer is finished, and their 60 times are not quite as good as my kid with a deadlift/football mentality. Baseball measures 60 yard dash rather than 40 meter because a double in baseball equates to a 60, and unless you are a pitcher, catcher or first baseman you are expected to run a 7.0 second or better 60 by MLB teams.
One other thing possibly anecdotal, or perhaps not, but my kid had the fastest 60 time and fastest 2-mile on the team. Two completely different modalities, and I can’t help but wonder if it’s because he is the ONLY deadlifter on the team and was hoisting 350 for 5 reps. Is the reason is simply because he’s just so much stronger than everyone? On paper the little 145 lb. kid should beat him (he’s 6’2″ 195) in the two-mile but it doesn’t quite work out that way. Maybe they fatigue more quickly, it’s not just a lung capacity measurement.
If you ever have kids, let them get strong.

ParticipantBrian doesn’t strike me as a guy who participated in power oriented athletic endeavors? Obviously the big-three sports, and things like wrestling, MMA, lacrosse (only because so many football players). You cannot get enough protein from eating food without going completely broke.
Thanks for the tip Fearful, I am feeling bitchy as hell right now at 43.

Participant

a man really should be able to carry his woman around, and even haul her upa flight of stairs,
haha, I really want to see the typical American husband carry his wife upstairs. That would be quite a sight.
True dat.
To the other poster about carrying wife around, I just mean to say that Deadlift is foundational for just about everything else. Want to sprint faster? Better long distance times? Jump higher? Easily move things around? Have a strong back, not a weak one? Yard work?
As far as Cross-fit that’s ok, but it’s overkill for most people. Robb Wolf used to be a big crossfit guy, and one thing they do is extreme high rep stuff. He said he once did the daily workout which involved doing some high rep deadlifts, and it killed his back. After that vowed never again, to DL cross-fit style. Now prefers strictly high weight, low rep (5 reps or less). Tim Ferris was on his podcast a little while back and stated that he tries to DL until there is only 1 more possible rep in the tank. If he can get to 5 reps both times, he knows he can add 5 lbs. next time.

ParticipantThere is absolutely nothing more functional in the weight room than deadlift. Soon Walter can hoist up the Mrs. and carry her around the house.
If you haven’t deadlifted a high weight you can’t understand. First off you’ll never get yolked up because you are keeping the reps under 5. Doing low reps at near maximal lifts does not cause hypertrophy. Now think of all how much of the entire body is used in the deadlift. It’s mano y mano you and the bar. Grip strength, hamstrings, Glutes, back, and especially the core because you must brace the core to pull 2-3X body weight. There is a great story about this track coach who took a little 9th grader and got her eventually deadlifting over 400 lbs. with almost no weight gain (more than 3X body weight) and she eventually was a US olympic gold medalist.

ParticipantI like Roku2 but it’s not for everyone. They have 1080p and 5.1 Dolby in their netflix app.
The mlb.tv interface is nice and there are a ton of channels you can add. However Roku makes it slightly tougher to watch your own stuff like you might with an HTPC. However many are using some apps like Plex for that type of functionality. I rented an Amazon movie the other night and the picture was sweet.

ParticipantCheck out Power to the People by Pavel Tsatsouline or something like that. You don’t have to follow it exactly you can pick two other exercises such as deadlift/bench press.
His program is intended for large gains in amount lifted by doing a little bit more each day for 5 days straight. Since your reps are so low, your muscles do not get tired, and doing near maximal lifts at 90-100% means you won’t get unnecessary bulk. You can find the book in google reader I am sure.
I was able to get to 300 lb. deadlift in about 2 months and felt great but tweaked my shoulder doing overhead press so I stopped (luckily not my pitching shoulder) Next time I try this I might stick to Bench. Anyway absolutely no weight gain, and I felt much lighter on my feet with a DL that high.
My HS Jr. is now DLing 360 for 5 reps, and soon will start the program again when fall baseball is over. He may get to 450 or so this time around with no weight gain and very impressive speed improvement. Plus now he doesn’t have to waste so much time in the gym. Pull the weight, do some box jumps, get out of there and go do baseball or MMA. i.e. by getting strong and not wasting time, he gets to enjoy the play stuff a little more.

ParticipantMr. Roboto, I am curious why you choose to pick out a terrible thing that’s happened and automatically assume that if we were to go the way of Liberty that we’d see an explosion in those stories?
At the risk of stating the obvious bad things do happen at times, and we can’t have a safety net for everything. Perhaps if folks had more of their money there would be other entrepreneurs popping up trashing those folks who would run their business with a lack of ethics.
The reality is that right now at this time, we are not ready for liberty in fact everything pointed to by OWS is going the way of world govt. which automatically implies world domination. However we’ve always had idealist leftists on campus now they are simply out marching. What we’ve not really had is an entire generation of young people influenced by a libertarian like Ron Paul.
Right now we have Dems who want to legislate their morals on us in the form of taxes for wealth redistribution. Or the pubbies who want to legislate more police state infrastructure etc. because they are law and order moralists. Both sides mean well, but I really want to make the choices for myself.
Deep down I seriously doubt the guy will win, but it’s encouraging to see so many young people coming to understand that essential liberties are more important than security safety nets (be they transfer payments or TSA checkpoint to protect us from terrorists)

ParticipantI actually participated in the Black Out. Didn’t give a lot, but it was pretty cool.
That said I still don’t expect him to win. If it’s Romney-Obama I just can’t imagine giving a shite. The problem with the GOP is there does not seem to be too many classical liberals waiting in the wings. To be a repubbie today means taking a dump on the 4th amendment and being quite proud of it. Once again it will be whether or not I can plug my nose and pull the Mitt lever.

ParticipantAren’t there estimates that as many as 50% do not pay any income tax? Over the years in order to get his tax cuts through Bush cut the low end, to where most get money back if they have a kid or two and make less than 30K.
I am not begrudging these folks their money, just saying everytime I did my sister’s taxes her Earned Income Credit was more than what she paid in. I wonder if the 9% ends up being even steven across the board, and thus more folks on the tax roll.

Participant

Hahahahahaha I love it! Multiple wars with no end in sight, the largest debt accumulated in the history of the earth, infrastructure rotting across the country, record unemployment, jobs flying overseas faster than ever, a drug war raging out of control on the border, a healthcare system that is broken beyond repair, and probably about 1000 other things that I can’t be bothered to name here.
And what are we talking about? Divisive “values issues” like abortion, gay marriage, “don’t-ask-don’t tell” etc…, just like we were talking about in 2007, just like we were talking about in 2003, in 1999, in 1995, in 1991, in 1986…
Bingo X2. Succinct and to the point.

ParticipantDammit I’m trying to convince my kid to play ball at Case-Western Reserve and that Cleveland has a great Indie/punk scene (which it does).
We need to keep these depression things off the net. Actually I don’t think I’ll want to pony up for 4 years at a high-end institution if he doesn’t get some kind of break.
I like Cleveland but it’s awful looking in some areas.

ParticipantGreat post CaRenter.
Often what is considered healthy to a physician and what we in the GenPop think of as healthy are at complete odds. My mother was the same way the only “heavy” kid in the family. A family where money was scarce and food was rationed equally amongst all the siblings.
Christ there is so much damn evidence that it’s not simply Calories in, Calories out.

One misconception from another post ocrenter, fatty foods will not leave you hungry later on, they are quite satiating.
fatty food routinely lead to overeating in the research environment.
you mentioned the Paleo diet previously. that is not a high fat diet. it focus on lean meats, reduce carb intake and change the carbs to whole grain.
Absolutely 100% not true.
If you have any interest watch this Nightline clips with Art Devany and Robb Wolf featured.
The cut in fat with Paleo comes from not eating Dairy. Paleo means no grains, no legumes, no sugar, no dairy. Caveman, if you can kill it, you can eat it. If you can pick it off a tree go for it. Most of it is centered around the claims that most gut issues, such as IBS etc. come from an intolerance of grains and dairy.
One of the more famous Paleo guys is right there in San Diego, Mark’s Sisson of “Primal Living” and Mark’s Daily Apple.
