ParticipantDiversity is overrated. It’s not like all whites are the same. We have Italians who are different from Jews, who are different from WASPs, who are different from eastern european immigrants. On my sons’ little YMCA basketball teams, I coached a couple of black kids, a couple of Mexican kids, a pair of Serbian twins, an Indian (Asian) kid, a Chinese girl, and for good measure some bi-racial kids. Plenty of diversity in Encinitas if you ask me.
For socio-economic diversity, in our town, there are a sizeable number of kids in the elementary school that live in a big apartment complex adjacent to the 5. There is also a little immigrant area forming, and each class has several kids who are 1st generation English learners with parents who don’t speak English.

ParticipantYou’ll be hard pressed to find anyone around here that will recommend you buy right now. Some are saying prime buying opportunity will occur from 2009-2011. Escala is a neat community, but if you buy at the end of your lease, you might not be able to unload it once your family wants to move to a regular home.
If you continue doing your homework, you’ll avoid making a mistake and buying at the end of your lease.

ParticipantYes off-topic but thanks for the article.

ParticipantIt isn’t little poor Black latino kids you need to worry about. It’s the Jr. High age and up when it starts to get a little scary. My wife taught in this kind of school back in Ohio, and trust me their are a ton of good people in the inner city, and she kind of misses that school. However had we stayed there, she didn’t like it quite enough for her to put her own kids into that school.
The reality is most people are safe if the parents are involved. Howard Stern often talks about being pissed at his parents for moving him into a 90% black school for “enrichment”. He got his ass kicked a lot.
One of her good kids (some would call poor white trash), got shot and killed recently, over some boyfriend stuff. Some gang-banging girl, pissed at some other girl over a boy, (two sista’s getting after it) one pulls out a pistol, misses and hits the other girl. I think that’s the kind of thing that ultimately kept us out. You can have easily have the wrong friends, or be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
However if one is willing to work at it, they can get a good education anywhere, with alternative schools, magnet schools, etc.

ParticipantSD Realtor, a lot of communities have their own elementary system. Cardiff where I live is actually separate from Encinitas. Solana Beach I believe is separate from Del Mar for instance. Not sure about RSF. In any case, you have slight differences among LCC and Torrey Pines, but I can’t imagine a few API points here or there tipping the balance that much.
For my money I’d take a nice home in Encinitas over a condo in Carmel Valley, all things being equal. However some people really want to get in TP High School. Depending where you are in CV, everything you do might be more convenient and walkable compared to Encinitas. However much of the growth in CV is in the outlying areas.
LCC and TP aren’t perfect. Nice schools yes, but quite huge, and I would think they totally cater to the achievers, but the middle of the road kids who aren’t that smart or athletic, are probably easily overlooked. Santa Fe Christian, and Cathedral Catholic are also growing in Coastal North County.

ParticipantWho the hell listens to Limbaugh? I sure as hell don’t.
You libs need to get over the idea, that we sit and salivate taking orders from Rush and O’Reilly. I can’t remember the last time I listened to Rush, I’d say 5-6 years ago. So who cares if he is a dropout.
Do I have to listen to some egghead Phd tell me it’s my duty to support affirmative action?
Well shoot, at least this bullshitter is educated, Rush is a dummy!!”
Lastly, I love your support for the soldiers, and especially what they could have done productively if not for this war. What you fail to understand is that the purpose of soldiers, is not to do a job and get the GI Bill. The purpose of the soldiers, is simply to kill the enemy. Kill, Kill, and kill some more. If I had a nickel for every time one of our colonels got pissed off and screamed at us, You know why we fill out this paperwork? To kill Russians, that’s why. Sure maybe one day instead of paperwork it was more pushups, or getting more planes off the ground, but the message was you are here to support the mission against the commie pricks. All that’s changed, is you are now here to support the mission against radical muslims instead of commies.

ParticipantSD Realtor, Torrey Pines, is San Dieguito schools. Torrey Pines, all the way north to La Costa Canyon, is all the same school district (in terms of high schools).
So basically Del Mar, Carmel Valley, Solana Beach, Cardiff, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, and South Carlsbad (La Costa) are all the same school system, much like RB, Poway, RP, and Mt. Carmel are all Poway schools.
There are also smaller, lottery type high schools (Canyon Crest, and San Dieguito), but basically anyone living in the towns mentioned are tied to either Torrey Pines, HS or La Costa Canyon, HS.

ParticipantJust as an FYI, I was certainly raised a conservative democrat. I was from a Union (UAW) family, and was most certainly influenced from the center. However in time, the party drifted, and I shifted. I still look at Tucker Carlson type conservatives as country-club republicans, though I should be past those types of infantile thoughts.
My Ohio congressmen was a conservative dem, but now of course he is sitting in jail (Traficant). In that district which was 90% democrat, you had to register dem so that in primaries you could ensure that the socialist was representing your party. It’s hard to believe one can move from Ohio to California, and go from a Democrat district to a Republican, but we certainly did.

ParticipantThe problem is in the lesser of two evils. Yes we can throw the bums out but at what cost? More tax and spend “progressive” policies?
This quick list of what I attribute to the left always veers me back, to the right.
– Affirmative action
– No parental notification for abortion
– Weak on foreign policy, defense spending
– Govt. Health Insurance
– Human Beings are the cause of Global Warming, particularly Americans
– Americans are the cause of all violence in the world
– Americans are the cause of every world evil
– Poor peoples here and around the world should be judged through a lens of compassion for the plight of their situation (i.e. gang bangers getting light sentences) rather than any through the results of any shameful crimes they might have committed. The last one might be better said, that the lib wants to “understand” what it is about our culture that caused a person to act barbaric. Instead, I don’t care how poor or destitute you are, you rape someone, you go away a long time, you kill someone, you should be put to death. Save the dime-store psycho-babble for Dr. Phil.

ParticipantI wouldn’t choose RB or Escondido, because you have too much 15 traffic. Sorrento Valley isn’t bad if you are ok with Mira Mesa HS (assuming you plan to use public schools).
Rancho Penasquitos, particularly the area south of 56, and west of 15, would mean an easy commute to Miramar using surface streets, and not a bad commute to Pendleton.
Encinitas is nice, Cardiff. I’d say Carmel Valley has the same basic advantages as RP, but with a better community. From CV, to La Costa avenue you are in San Deiguito schools, which are good. RP is in Poway schools.
Personally, I don’t care that much for Mira Mesa (San Diego schools) but there are people on here who seem to like it.

ParticipantMy thoughts are similar to the author’s. We did not handle the assimilation correctly. The occupation’s of Japan and Germany were far more reaching, and allowed over that 10 year period, better assimilation.
Let’s face the Japanese and German fighters were far more fierce and not impotent like Arab fighters, who wage war from behind women and children. Yet, despite being more worthy opponents, they were eventually controlled, and are now stable vibrant democracies.
Oh and for Wiley, history has shown in general that democratic nations tend not to attack one another. If you bust up the center of the Arab world with a democratic nation, you could potentially have a more far reaching peace. This is why I believed in the effort. As it stands there is only one democracy in the Middle East.

ParticipantMusic to my ears… We roll up on a VW van plastered with literature so as the car behind you doesn’t get bored at the stoplight.
12 year old asks, why do the hippies put so many bumper stickers on their car? I can thank Homer Simpson for that one, because I have never made fun of hippies in front of the kids. I have of course made fun of the bumper sticker crowd, but otherwise he made the connection. You have to remember if as a kid you want to rebel a little and be a contrarian in these coastal towns, you’ll wind up being a Republican. For instance many of his classmates like Green Day, but he proudly wears Motley Crue, and Zeppelin shirts.

ParticipantJG I should have looked at what was coming because I feel guilty that the kids haven’t seen a B-1B up close. My oldest was actually born on-base but was only 1 when I got out.
Next year I’ll have to watch and see what is coming. I just hate traffic and long lines and chose not to attend. Is it a pain getting in and out of the airshow? Sounds like getting there early is the way to go.

ParticipantRegardless of the name, is there a way to sneak into Rancho Bernardo, insteading of going all the up to Escondido and crossing back to the 15?
