ok sdrealtor, I’ll defer to your experience. I’ll watch for racist behavior the next time I’m in Philly.
About prejudices being passed on from generation to generation, that tends to happen more easily in static ethnic enclaves.
Maybe I’m romanticizing but when I’m on the East I’m reminded of the rival gangs of Westside Story.
I was driving through Port Richmond (or thereabouts) when I encountered a bunch of stoop and lawn chair sitting white men shootin’ the breeze. They yelled “what the fuck you lookin’ at” as they knew that I wasn’t of the neighborhood. Bull-dogs guarding their turf.
Yeah, I know that Philly is very corrupt. San Diego’s corruption problems pale in comparison.
There are lots of poor Blacks on public housing in Philly and you have to drive by the projects all the time. The city is much denser than San Diego so the angst comes to the surface more.
But so far, I’m not bothered. I still like Philly. It’s a cultural experience for me.

December 26, 2011 at 10:43 AM #734988bpnbpnParticipantPeople keep saying having garage in front will cause too much street space to be taken by parking.
This is not true. We drove through del sur. Homes with garage in rear are the worst. The home owners never want to drive through the alley and park in the garage. The easiest is to park on the street in the front of the home and just go through the front door.
If the street is narrow (like in del sur), it is so hard to drive even at 15mph…
