I loved that house. I loved loved loved the neighborhood. Very walkable – a small grocery store 2 blocks away, a couple of nice restaurants and bars – all less than 3 blocks away. An old vaudeville theater that showed musical acts a block and a half away. Small town mainstreet feel, right around the corner.
but only about a mile from the Philly city border. 3-4 blocks to the Septa train that would get you into the city and/or the airport. (It is LIBERATING to be able to roll a suitcase to the trainstation – with my car in the garage at home. The garage in the back, lol.)
But…. Philly is hot and sweaty in the summer. Miserable. I like moderate. I really loved the spring/fall there. And the winters were ok. I *hated* the summers there.
My kids are growing up going to the beach a lot, doing year round sports and other activities, and my husband is happier here.
No regrets about moving. But I wish I could move that neighborhood here.
I wish you could move that neighborhood here, too! We’d be neighbors. π
It really does sound like paradise, except for the humidity. Heat is okay, humidity is most definitely not.
As far as California goes, even I have to admit that the ability to participate in outdoor activities all year long is pretty amazing. We natives are a bit spoiled, as many of us never really imagine it being any other way.
How about when you lived in Washington? Is that any better than Philly?
Really like the Philly vibe as you’ve described it, though. The trees and sidewalks just make me want to pick up and move there.

March 16, 2011 at 7:31 PM #677677sdrealtorParticipantFWIW you would hate it there. Philly is one of the most intolerent major cities in the US. Racism is open and widespread at all levels of education, income and intellect. You can find neighborhoods like that in just about any part of the country outside of the sunbelts. If you want one, feel free. They are verywhere.

It’s weird, because people down here keep cutting down trees. Apparently, they think they’re “dirty.” π
