As tax payers we are on the hook for promises made in good times by individuals with little or no accountability. Now our municipalities and states all face bankruptcy.
The fact regardless of how one views the matter, is that unless things turn around in a huge way economically for ALL of us, there is not currently enough money in the universe to make these obligations in the long term, leaving our infrastructure in ruins and our government unable to govern.

August 14, 2009 at 5:13 AM #444601blahblahblahParticipantI don’t know who Samuel Clemmens is, but more than likely he has never held a five year old girl in his arms while she died and then had to tell her parents and a hundred other things that eat away at you, and each time calling his own kids to tell them he will be missing the school play or christmas, again. These things change you, and untimatley contribute to an early date with your maker, so his opinion mens Sh*& to me.
If you don’t know who Samuel Clemens was, then I’m hoping you weren’t born in the states or at least didn’t attend school here.
And if they deserve pensions because the work is dangerous, why aren’t we pushing for pensions for truck drivers or farmworkers (both more dangerous jobs according to that BLS data)?
