wow. This is just absurd. $535 is what probably half month rent for a lot of people… I mean you probably can afford this ticket, and so can I…I can’t imagine someone on minimum wage getting one of these….
Seriously, doesn’t it strike anyone that this is absurd? wow. state really needs money. $535 fine for a red light, which in itself is questionable tactic to ticket someone this way..
You know. It’s just wrong to assign a financial penalty to traffic offenses. If they were really interested in preventing this from happening, they would assign something like picking up trash for 100 hrs, in which it doesn’t matter if you could cough up the $500 or so….
People walk in Carmel Valley? WTF?
Driving is actually a privilege or hadn’t you heard?
I think $500 is getting off easy for running a red light. People get killed that way.
That’s bullshit… The red light camera can be off…way off. I’ve seen the ones in Carmel Valley in Del Mar Heights go off on the wrong time. Also, IF your car is at the shop and your mechanic blows through a red light, guess who ends up getting the ticket in the mail and who has the burden to prove it’s not you???
Bullshit right back at you.
The lights are not going off the wrong time, they are being calibrated at specific times. Just because a light went off does not necessarily mean that somebody is going to get a ticket.
And by the way, the camera clearly identifies both the vehicle and the driver. Have you ever seen one of those tickets? As for the specific intersection you are talking about, it is notorious with folks wanting to breeze through the red lights. Forget a $500 fine, I’d rather have death penalty for those who hurt somebody on that intersection. I almost got run over many times at that spot.
Typical carmel valley idiots, they want rules for others but cannot be bothered with little things like traffic rules themselves.
If you see a fellow walking across that intersection with his middle finger held high and gesturing to the drivers, you have just seen the dumbrenter. And an overwhelming number of those that intend to kill me at that intersection are either asian or female (or both). I can understand the ladies wanting a piece of me, but what have I ever done to the other group?
So slow the fk down at that intersection people. Where ever you plan to go and no matter how late you are to pick up your brat, it is not worth killing another human over. That red light is not a friendly suggestion. It is the law that requires you to stop so that a fellow like me can walk my ass to safety.
the Poway red light camera are off experimentally for the next 6 months.
April 9, 2013 at 12:04 AM #761102CubeParticipantI noticed the one at Community and Scripps Poway Parkway had a cover over it. Kinda freaked me out.
I’ve seen more people drive dangerously erraticly as a result of red light cameras than I’ve seen without.
I didn’t fully appreciate the cover over it until I was stopped at the light. Maybe for people who drive the road all the time will come to recoginze it as disabled and use judgement accordingly. I’m not one to run red lights on purpose, but I will likely still be among those who will stop dangerously quickly there to avoid any risk of a stale yellow going red. Just my instinct these days when I see those extra poles, and flashs, and high contrast borders around the lights.

my suspicion is this is purely a financial decision. At $500 a pop, these tickets are much more likely to be contested. With lawyer fees only at $100, it is very simple math. But they can’t lower the price of the ticket because it has to cover for the monitoring service fee. Therefore, they are more trouble than their worth.
April 9, 2013 at 8:35 AM #761106spdrunParticipantI don’t know — there are red-light cameras in NYC and the fine is $50, sent to the owner of the car. No idea if they make a profit, but this is supposed to be law enforcement, not the maffia.
April 9, 2013 at 9:28 AM #761107SD TransplantParticipantIn the news (radio), it was mentioned that since the red light cameras, there was a significant increase rear end collisions due to sudden braking. Apparently, Poway has decided to run a study to see if the rear end accidents will subside during this 6 months period when the cameras are off. I hope they turn them off forever.

April 10, 2013 at 9:14 AM #761136jimmyleParticipantI am commenting not just about this case but for all traffic tickets. Hire a lawyer. My wife has four tickets in the last three years. The lawyer was able to get three tickets dismissed and one ticket fine reduced signicantly and the cost of ticket school waived. The lawyer charges just $50 a case. What she (her assistant) does is file a long extension immediately and then again if necessary (delay tactic?). Once she goes to court on your behalf, she wins more than half of the cases and even cases that are not dismissed, the fines get reduced much more than the cost you pay her.

Ugh. Ticket school. Hopefully it’s online so you can pay your 15-year old neighbor $20 to do the thing. Or, if it requires physical presence, hopefully you can bring some weed to calm the desire to kick the preachy prick who’s teaching it across the room.
