If my kids were to be detained in MX or elsewhere out of the country, I have counseled them to say nothing except ask to make a phone call and call me ASAP so I can call the American consulate in that country and send help or even accompany that help (MX). It’s not a good idea to talk to law enforcement unless you are simply a witness and not suspected of breaking the law. I have told them that if they are brought in as a suspect for questioning, to refuse, demand counsel and allow themselves to be booked, instead.

In order to sell a drug for an indication, there has to be a diagnosis. With a diagnosis of BED, doctors can (ethically) at least try someone on stimulants before moving on to the gastric bypass option. I think that’s the case – perhaps some are too obese for stimulants to be safe. Considering the fact that the basic stimulants have been around forever, they are generic and therefore cheap. It seems like a reasonable option.

Yes, reasonable… But I wonder if, with all the advertising, we’re enabling people by saying things are medical conditions they have little control over.

And what free will we do have is probably insufficient to address very basic, primitive issues like eating. And even if it does it is insufficient to make a difference every day under every circumstance.

Interesting article. If free will is mostly illusion, that underscores the need for good policies to guide people. Of course, what’s good is debatable.

I like to watch travel and food videos. Some cultures eat a lot of fat and oils. Some, much less. People are influenced by their cultures and learn to love things that aren’t good for them. I just watched some videos about Jordan. People there (and in the Middle East in general) are kinda chubby. They eat lots of cheese and about a cup of olive oil per day!
