As several other posters have commented, it’s ALL about LOCATION, not upgrades, when it comes to pricing in prime locations. Some friends recently looked at some coastal properties that had fantastic locations, were almost in the category of “fixers,” with no real upgrades, and even in this market, each property had three or four offers.
Upgrades seem to be what builders and sellers in less desirable locations offer to make the lack of location more attractive to potential buyers. Not really a deciding factor when it comes to those who wish to purchase real estate in a great location.
San Diego NativeParticipantThis question came up from friends who were visiting last year, and here’s the list we gave them. I believe all of these restaurants are open on Thanksgiving, but be sure to call ahead for prices and reservations ASAP.
On the high end in La Jolla, there’s La Valencia, The Shores and The Marine Room.
I think the Rancho Valencia Resort in Rancho Santa Fe may also be open. I remember that we dined there with friends on several holidays, but can’t remember if any were on Thanksgiving.
Also try L’Auberge in Del Mar, and possibly Jake’s and Poseidon.
If you want a truly reasonable home-style Thanksgiving, Mimi’s Cafe is also open, I believe. They have several locations.
I’m sure other posters will offer their thoughts, but this is a start.
Happy Thanksgiving!

San Diego NativeParticipantAs you will see from reading the various threads on this board there are as many ideas about the best places to live in San Diego as there are people. In essence, it will come down to your preferences and, of course, your $$$’s.
Just about everyone, including myself, and most of our friends and family, live west of I-5, from Sunset Cliffs and Point Loma to Del Mar and Carlsbad. My family and I live in La Jolla, above LJ Country Club, and overlooking the ocean. It’s beautiful, but be prepared for sticker shock.
We purchased our home almost twenty years ago–when we were in our 20’s–and it’s gone to the moon, but prices are dropping in some areas of LJ, so if you are going to be working in LJ, you might want to check out the zip codes of 92037 and 92038 on realtor.com, to get a feel for the $$$’s and types of homes available. Also check out the Del Mar zip of 92014 and 92130 in Carmel Valley. All of these areas would be highly accessible to a La Jolla commute, and should give you some general price comparisons before you start working with a realtor.
Best of luck!!

of I-5” for years. Sadly, watching this city sprawl to building on land on which homes should never have been built is proving to be catastrophic. Only time will tell to what degree.I have always felt San Diego should have placed a moratorium on construction years ago–as Marin County did. Greed and stupidity in the construction industry have ruled this state for years, and now we are paying a price beyond comprehension.

Another option is simply to stay where you are, be glad you (most likely) only paid in the five or low six figures for your home–as we did–in a prime location–that it’s paid off–with very low property taxes–and continue to enjoy the San Diego lifestyle–what’s not to love??!!
Only time will tell what’s going to happen to the future of San Diego real estate–jobs–interest rates. Those who have their homes paid off, with cash saved, will fare best, should things get really nasty. You have it all–ENJOY!
