ParticipantI can understand your dislike of Hillary, but shouldn’t you like Barack? He was church volunteer and community activist.

ParticipantDon’t despair, kritinejm. I’m sure jg is alright but just a little blinded by his conservatism. Everyone knows that gays are just as good as straights. Our laws and institutions need to catch up to where society is at.

ParticipantAN, I just looked at that Compass Point property you mentioned. I’ve been in that neighborhood once. A friend of a friend of a friend lives there. Yeah, It’s more like detached townhouse to me also.
Bright lime green walls? Interesting decoration for sure. Someone really has to love that house to put in an offer. It does have the advantage of a corner lot.

ParticipantHere’s a link to a rental house at Aviara. I posted this in a different thread previously. For $2,100 why buy? You can live there and let the landlord subsidize your lifestyle.
Owner bought for $432,500 on 3/27/2002. For that purchase price, they aren’t even cash flow positive.

ParticipantAN, I too don’t understand the auto sales reasoning. Auto sales should hold up even if some companies aren’t doing well. If the Big 3 loose market share, the other makes should pick-up the slack and auto units should grow. Are you saying that many buyers will buy nothing but GM, Ford and Chrysler?
I think that a drop in overall auto sales is a sign of recession.

ParticipantI’m with you poorgradstudent. I don’t mind biking or walking. Given a choice, I wouldn’t have a car.
Yeah, looking at cars to judge people is shallow. But the reality is that we live in a consumer-driven society. People do judge you by what you drive. America is a country of social climbers and people forget very quicky where they came from.
I’m sure that as you get your graduate degree and take on a professional job, you’ll get “assimilated” very quickly.
Years ago, a friend of mine was in medical school and driving a rusted old Ford. Now he’s a big shot and one day we were riding in his car. We were at a stop light and he made a snide remark about the car next to us “Geez, how can people drive such old crappy stuff?”

Participantrhinopham, no, you don’t have to wait for the through to appeal. You can appeal every year as long as prices continue to drop. If, every year, you can show 3 comparable properties at lower prices, you should get a continual downward adjustment until the market hits bottom.
When the market begins to recover, leave it up to County Assessor to adjust the assessment upwards as they have time or remember (they “forgot” to reassess Duncan Hunter’s house until the UT mentioned it. They are still looking into it).

Participantnsr, you’re the best kind of conservative. I totally agree with you.
Currently churches don’t have to show that they spend anything on charity. Donations could be spent building that $50 million mega-church, a fat salary for the pastor, a Mercedes for his wife, and of course a luxury apartment for the pastor’s mistress (or boyfriend).
Churches should be treated like any other charity. They need to be accountable to the public.

ParticipantLook at this modest condo in Mira Mesa. This is an example of a unit whose sales history spans the 1980s real estate boom. 12 years for a recovery. I expect history to repeat itself. Most people live in their houses 5 years so we’ll see some forced sales at big losses in 2008.

ParticipantWhat you are referring to is Proposition 8 that allows you to file for temporary reassessment of your property.
Anyone who bought after 2004 should file for reassessment. It’s a simple process and anyone can do it themselves. I did it in 1990s and received a reduction in property taxes. But when values go back up, you’ll be back at an assessment of purchase price + 2% compounded annually.
Property tax wise, it’s best to buy at the through and hold on to your property forever.
Here are some links to the SD Assessor’s site.

ParticipantI read somewhere that luxury cars are the fastest growth segment of the auto industry. People have come to expect to drive a luxury car as part of self-fulfillment. It’s psychology more than anything else. Especially, in Southern California, we are judged by the kind of car that we drive so people are willing to make sacrifices to be own a nice car.
It used to be that we bought expensive cars for reliability. But now, all cars are pretty much very reliable. So we buy car as an extension of our personalities.
I’d like a Maserati because they are sexy looking. …but they are too rich for my blood.

Participantbgates, to answer your question, here’s a link to a Washington Post article from today on how many Frenchmen feel about religion and marriage.
I’ve not lived in France for 23 years but I always feel French in many ways. The French are not rich and powerful like Americans but they have a wonderful way of looking at life.
ha,ha,ha, I like the joke about the burning cars. 🙂

ParticipantDon’t allow your kids to lose respect for your opinions because of your sterotypes. Be proud of your background, your values, but your kids will decide their future, not you.
Well said kristinejm. Nowadays, kids are developing a sense of fairness that’s not compatible with the prejudices of the past. I wouldn’t be surprised if gays were generally better parents because they planned their families (unlike straights whose babies appear at inopportune times).PerryChase
ParticipantI beleive that one way to reform the tax code is to get rid of the home mortgage interest deduction. It was meant to encourage home ownership. However, it’s doesn’t do any good because the market simply priced that tax break into the prices of houses.
If the tax deduction were taken away, home prices would drop accordingly and affordability would remain the same.
Generally, the government should get out of micro-managing and let the markets take care of themselves.
