Failure of public health policy blinded by religious resurgence at the time.

There is tons of info on the Reagan’s Administration’s inaction on AIDS from indifference to lack of funding, to deference to the religious right.
I didn’t know that, but apparently Diane Feinstein’s budget for AIDS as mayor of SF was larger the Federal budget for the same for the first 2 years of the epidemic.
http://profiles.nlm.nih.gov/ps/retrieve/Narrative/QQ/p-nid/87
With no cure and no vaccine, educating the public on how AIDS was transmitted, who was at risk, and how to protect oneself was the only way left to slow the spread of the disease. Since this task fell under the mandate of his office, Koop concluded that “if ever there was a disease made for a Surgeon General, it was AIDS.” Nevertheless, for the first four years in office, the nation’s top health officer was prevented from addressing the nation’s most urgent health crisis, for reasons he insisted were never fully clear to him but that were no doubt political.
Let’s put this in context a bit here. AIDS wasn’t identified until 1981. At that time, the country was in the midst of double-digit inflation and on the verge of a recession with unemployment reaching double-digit. Then there was this little pesky thing called the USSR that we had to play a potentially deadly chess game with.
So it was some kind of a conspiracy that AIDS did not get more attention? Even though, it was merely just identified and little was known about it let alone a cure? How much attention or $$ should the gov’t pour into each and every newly identified disease for it to not to be demonized? Would you say the same thing wrt to the $$ and effort the gov’t putting into research for Ebola?

ParticipantSomewhat off-topic. Has anyone read Justice C. Thomas dissent or an an excerpt of it where he mentioned about slavery and the internment of Japanese-Americans during WWII?
I found it very shocking. I am quite sure if the same thing was said by any of the other justices, we would still be hearing it in the news.

ParticipantMost people probably have the perception of polygamy being a one-to-many relationship. Would people feel differently about polygamy if it’s really a many-to-many relationship?

In the big scheme of things, this should not be a factor of any significance. Just pretend you shorted 1000 shares of brcm before the buy-out announcement by avago 😉

ParticipantIt’s pretty much a done deal that intc will acquire altr. The $100B question is what’s qcom going to do? qcom seems too big to be acquired by another company and not nimble enough to expand by acquiring other companies. May be it’s time to split the Q up.
Possibly 5 years from now ilmn will be the talk of the town instead of qcom.

ParticipantAnyone else here seeing the similarity between the “irrational exuberance” of the stock market, recent/current IPOs and mergers & acquisitions to those leading up to the major market corrections in 2001 & 2002?
Stock prices may have been reacting positively to these news. However, my interpretation of these M&A is that these companies probably realized there’s little or no growth in the near future and are using M&A as a way to create more value (read stock prices).
Out of curiosity, I searched it up and I found this site that shows 7 out of 10 largest M&A transaction worldwide occurred in 1999 & 2000.

Are we closer to a serious correction in the stock market?

ParticipantI have been using ooma for about 5 years and really happy with it. I haven’t tried it, but there’s also an ooma app for smartphones that would allow you to receive and make calls.
If you want to use your cell phone for home use, there are cordless phones (i.e. VTech Connect to Cell) with built-in bluetooth that allows you to pair your cell phone with them. With this you can have multiple cordless phones that you can use to make and receive calls from via a single cell phone.

Participant
This was my response when inquiring about new housing “Thank you for your interest in our new home community. We are selling homes about 5 months before they’re built! We go to our Priority List first and then we sell out of the latest Phase release within a week. You can get on our Priority List by getting pre-approved by CMG Financial. I have attached their contact information. Approvals from outside lenders will not get you on the list.” I guess one doesn’t have to finance with CMG but seems a little strict.
This required pre-approval by CMG is more of a vetting process than anything. I don’t think you’re required/forced to obtain the loan through CMG if you get to the stage of obtaining the loan.

Participant
Sounds like China is trying to put some in check.
Xi certainly has been making a lot of noise. The question is, is he really doing it for the betterment of the people and the country or is it simply for personal political gain. I think it’s the latter. Just to decipher the information coming out from China is tricky in itself.

Participant
So it looks like one of my windows sprung a pressure leak…[img_assist|nid=20890|desc=|link=node|align=left|width=400|height=400]
Window is on the non-sliding side, and it’s out of warranty.
Do I need to replace the entire window (including frame/etc)? Or is there some magical glass/window company that can just replace the window without removing the entire frame/etc.
Go with Milgard Windows if you’re going to replace it. You’ll get the peace of mind of a life-time warranty.
