ParticipantPerry and I probably could not be more different politically speaking, but he is correct, and this is not some wild stretch.
Anyone who has followed Ben’s blog with any regularity knows that what Perry posted is an ongoing theme over there. Anecdotal story after anecdotal story, about big dumb lug, who can’t say no the wife. In my 16 years of marriage (started at 22), my wife wins most every battle, because, frankly, I just don’t care about that much.
However I had to basically tell her a few times to “sit down and shut up” as regards her nesting instinct. (We moved here two years ago).
Now when I say “sit down and shut up” I don’t mean it literally, as she’d probably kick my ass. (she does crossfit with some navy seal dude). What I meant was a continual education process about just how stupid a mistake it would be to purchase, and eventually she trusted my stubborness.
She also sees the emotional side of a home more than I though many on this site do not fit that stereotype. We had to eat about 9K when I sold my house in Ohio (Nov. 2005) and at closing I had to sell some stock to pay the note. I was hoping to hold onto that stock for the long term but it was the only non retirement account investment that I had.
I hurt her feelings by saying something along the lines of “buying that house was the absolute stupidest thing I have ever done”. Of course I loved that house too, but I was just bitter about losing my only real asset. She saw it as her dream home (still pissed at me for moving us out here), where the kids had so many great memories, and in the case of our youngest it’s the only other home he remembers outside of the crapbox we rent now.

ParticipantPerry I am the same way, a little uneasy about sending people here. I have some good friends who are quite liberal (much like you), and I almost never engage them in debate like we do here, and she probably has no idea where I stand on most things. I have said some things in print here, that I’d never actually say to them. Not that I am physically afraid, as I am of course a bad-ass ;)… just out of respect I let them speak their mind, and kind of nod my head.
As she was thinking of getting “into real-estate” I pointed her to this site, and then it dawned on me that some of the political stuff might bring me “out of the closet”. While I don’t use my real name, anyone I sent here would know from my handle exactly who I am.

ParticipantDon’t you think you are going a bit far in sharing information? I mean me, I don’t care that you shared names, and companies, but I am surprised that you’d be so Cavalier about it. Really it’s no skin off my back, and I really enjoyed your posting. You almost need boards like this since sharing salaries and strategies with co-workers might not be in your best interest.

ParticipantBy the way, I am not sure of how people are arranging their work hours there in San Diego. They come late and leave early.
Hey now you weren't the guy reminding the teacher or professor about the assignment they forgot to collect were you? Some employers must be ok with adjusting around rush hour.

ParticipantMost of the elementary schools in Encinitas are fine. I know some families who had a bad experience at Capri, but others have said they had no issues.

ParticipantTexas is of course a no-income tax state, so for me I think that’s about a 9.5% raise? Actually I am not sure what the top tax rate is.
I think in the end property taxes will be the same, just a higher % in Texas, and if you salary stays virtually the same, then you are way ahead of the game.
Dallas used to have the “West End” and “Deep Ellum” areas. Deep Ellum was a bit more shady, and edgy. West End is probably pretty hopping right now because they built that Mavericks arena and with their success, a lot of folks are trickling into the west end. I could swear reading somewhere about a year ago that Deep Ellum was having trouble attracting businesses and dealing with crime issues, but I can’t say for sure.
The reason I’d pick Dallas first, Austin second is because when you tire of the road, you can land on your feet in the DFW area. Austin is also not too bad in this regard, as there are many software jobs there. San Antonio, not so hot for tech. Cool place, the riverwalk is fun. Austin had great BBQ. Actually that’s one thing I miss about Texas was BBQ, however luckily I found Tri-Tip from Seaside market in Cardiff that made me forget all about Texas BBQ.
