Brian,
I hope you never need the cops. You do not understand what their job is and you are so caught up in your ideololgy, you fail to see the forest for the trees. If there is a report of a burglary in progress they are going to determine if the person there is the homeowner. I am sure you could not begin to understand the complexities of their job. Maybe you would prefer to live elsewhere, instead of this police state.
Zeitgest, you’re beginning to sound like a big government Democrat.
One is allowed to be rude to anyone one wants on one’s property, especially to an intruder who should not have been there in the first place.
That is not against the law and not certainly disorderly conduct.
To me, this is not a issue of race but an issue of individual property rights. The police need more than a hesitant phone call to barge into someone’s house demanding ID.
Yes, I listened to the tape. The woman who made the 911 call didn’t even see the men going in. She was reporting what another elder woman saw.
Witness: I don’t know what’s happening. I just had an elder woman standing here and she had noticed two gentlemen trying to get in the house at that number 17 Ware St. And, uh, they kinda had to barge in and they broke the screen door and they finally got in when I looked, I went further closer to the house, I noticed two suitcases. So I’m not sure if these are two individuals who actually work there, I mean who live there.
Operator: You think they might have been breaking in?
Witness: I don’t know because I have no idea.
Operator: Do you think the possibility might have been there or, what do you mean by barged in? They kicked the door in?
Witness: No, they were pushing the door in like, uh, the screen part of the front door was…
Operator: How did they open the door itself with the lock?
Witness: I didn’t see a key or anything because I was a little bit away from the door but I did notice that they pushed their…I’ll say it again. Crowley was stupid to arrest Gates. And Obama was politically careless for calling it stupid. Nevertheless, the carelessness of the latter does does obviate the stupidity of the former.

July 30, 2009 at 11:50 AM #439085ZeitgeistParticipantThose are fighting words. I am no Democrat. I am more of an intellectual plutocrat. We agree on some of the stupidity, except I consider Gates had a lot of duplicity in the way the incident unraveled. I wonder how a female cop would have handled the incident?

July 30, 2009 at 12:13 PM #439095SD RealtorParticipantWhat is an interesting note is that there was a black cop there as well who has been a staunch defender of Crowley.
So here are some questions to consider.
1 – Would Gates have acted in the same manner towards the black cop as he did towards Crowley? Would he have hurled the same insults particularly about the black cops mom?
2 – If the black cop would have taken the same steps as Crowley and he has indicated he would have, would this be an issue at all? Would this even have been reported in the media?
3 – Most important would our president have poked his nose into this and would he have said the same thing about the black cop that he said about Crowley?
So it seems to me that the question of “acceptable” beligerence seems to depend on race.
Sad commentary.
Also a sad commentary that the lady who reported the breakin is receiving death threats. I guess she should be partially to blame as well.
