the we dont need another stinking paris hilton taxes: the rockefellers and morgans are still going strong even after surviving decades of stiff inheritance taxation. elimination of the tax would only amount to a paris hilton entitlement and acceleration of corporate consolidation and control of america. tort reform: just like inflation, tort reform is a con. medical expenses, insurance costs going up because of "frivolous" lawsuits? no, it's because those lawsuits that are justified and right don't and can't go far enough: merck killing people with unsafe drugs is only fined a few bucks. they immediately turn those costs over on future business. rather than… merck getting sued into non-operation and the persons responsible being barred from working in the industry, thereby allowing competition from new and small independants. illegal immigration: with a wave of the illegal immigration flag, nationalism and racism are immediately stirred, overwhelming the insect-like attention spans of the american people. immigrant employees, legal or illegal are only a problem now because of all the years of union busting and anti-labor policies.
I'm sure a lot of these folks here that are so anti-immigrants have native American blood oozingdoing their arms and legs π
I don't understand what the f*ck is the big deal with this. I see these illegals hardworking and willing to do what a lot of american citizens who would rather take a welfare handout before considering doing what these folks do. The only gripe i have is that illegals don't pay taxes and they get the benefits of the state..But I would consider this a failed U.S. policy that apparently no one wants to address.
At the same time, they are contribute to this economy as spenders and earners. I hardly consider these folks "stealing our jobs", because I doubt most americans would want to work at these jobs to begin with. Even so consider if you couldn't find cheap labor. Those business (farms/etc) would dry up and move overseas, and we be importing even a heck of a lot more.
And frankly American labor is ridiculously expensive. $100/hr for a frickin plumber?

May 18, 2007 at 9:38 PM #53764CoronitaParticipantDon't forget that once they have legal status here whether it be a green card or visa, do you think they will go back to picking strawberries or anything else? No, forget picking crops, now they can work anywhere else, and we will be back to having to find ag workers again…perpetual cycle, we need guest workers, no anchor babies and tough enforcement of the laws we have…put the employers in jail. I am also contacting my senators…I suggest you do the same.
If they improve themselves, find better jobs, and pay more taxes, how is this a bad thing for society? Perhaps some folks feel threaten because their use to a cushion quality of living…Really, maybe they folks need to do what the rest of people who want a better future have been doing all along…uh, work harder????
I understand this might be new, and hard to grasp concept…But this is a capitalist society. If someone can do your job beter, faster, cheaper, and/or with superior quality, don't they desire to get rewarded for this?
If some kid at a college can replace me at work for 1/2 price of what my employer pays me, by all means the employer should do it. Because it wouldn’t make any sense not to.

Seriously, I would have a lot of sympathy with you…Because folks in your position would realy be the people getting screwed…but again, doubt anything will happen.Β

May 19, 2007 at 8:25 AM #53800bubble_contagionParticipantI was just kidding, I don’t have a H1-B. Giving amnesty to the illegals is unfair for the people that have been slowly going through the complex and expensive legal process of immigration.
I also see the potential for much abuse since it will be impossible to tell who was here before Jan 1, 07 and who really has been working hard in the US and should be allowed to stay.

Except for certain land crossings, all foreigners coming in to the USofA are required to give the street address of where they’re staying and are issued I94 card to record their entry. So yes, Homeland Security does record visitors but they don’t follow up and deport visitors who overstay.
———-
I think that the $5000 penalty is too much and few illegals will be able to, or will want to pay that amount without the guarantee that they’ll be legalized. Paying $5000 with an application is no guarantee of approval. $1000 would be a fair penalty in my view.
Those of you who oppose immigration reform should take the pragmatic view. The 12 million illegals are here already. Do you want them to remain here illegally and be part of the underground economy; or do you want them to be integrated in society. Is deportation even an option?

jg, you feel strongly enough about this issue to want to impeach Bush. What would you propose?
I would impeach Bush on Iraq but give him credit for doing the right thing on immigration. That shows you how opposites differ but might become bedfellows to achieve a common goal. π
