This sickens me. pat – that’s right. There are so many homeless people. I’m sure they would not be picky and gladly live somewhere, anywhere w/a roof over their head and whatever they can get in the way of income, working at McDonalds. This is America. I just shake my head when I hear this.
Jp-Your compassion is utterly disgusting. You must train yourself to realize that the weak are your enemy. It’s best just to block them out or demonize them. Or better yet, think of them as less then human, it will be beneficial to you mental health. The coming years will demand it. Besides that kind of thing is infectious and it would be horrid if it spread world wide. Imagine the effect on the military-industrial-complex. It would fuck up the economy, for goodness sake!

It would cost more money to make them habitable than to raze them. The owners have been foreclosed on – the banks don’t want to invest in razing them… so they’ve abandoned them as well. These houses are stripped of plumbing and anything of value – they are NOT safe.
It’s all well and good to say let homeless vets live in them – but that isn’t very compassionate either since they’re not safe.
It’s not quite as black and white as suggested.

June 13, 2009 at 9:42 PM #415286DanielParticipantIt has nothing to do with compassion, poor/rich, homeless, etc. A house is not a toaster or a car. You can’t move it from one place to another. If there are too many houses in one place (because people are leaving), then there are simply too many houses. Do you think homeless folks from San Diego would go to Detroit if they were offered free shelter there? I really doubt that. After all, some of those houses sold for $1 (the median price in the city of Detroit was $6,000 last month). I’m pretty sure even the homeless have $1 to spare.
It may seem frustrating for those of us leaving in crowded cities with housing shortages, but houses in some decaying cities like Detroit and Flint are as useful as houses at the North Pole.
