I’ve only ever taken the Catalina Express from Dana Point: http://www.catalinaexpress.com/
I agree with 4plex that it’s a quick escape — not much to do there. But it’s got a natural beauty and some history to it that makes it an interesting weekend trip. It’s something “different” than most SoCal adventures. To be honest, it felt like a sloooooowww retirement community to me, but sometimes that’s the point. The submarine boat trip around the kelp forests and garibaldi made the whole trip worth it for me — like scuba diving without having to get wet.

I love it there
Russian River is awesome. I used to live there. But it is an 11 hour drive from here.
