July 3, 2012 at 2:23 AM #747146CA renterParticipantWow, I’m surprised they’re closing June Mountain, too.
This past year really sucked for them with the lack of good snow. Let’s hope things pick up for them in the future.
July 3, 2012 at 6:13 AM #747151The-ShovelerParticipantThese days the younger generation plays video games for thrills, we used to have to go out and risk our lives (well ok maybe just serious injury) just so we could get a thrill.
Same with cars I think, need a speed thrill, just play a racing video game.
Very few teens and twenty something’s out on the slopes compared to my generation anyway.July 3, 2012 at 7:02 AM #747152desmondParticipantThe last time I went skiing I was using Rossy’s 210’s…..
July 3, 2012 at 10:58 AM #747159KSMountainParticipantI remember Rossi 210’s and Tyrolia and Marker bindings.
Things have changed a lot since then with shaped skis…

July 3, 2012 at 11:48 AM #747162bearishgurlParticipantThis is very, very unfortunate. I was just there in late January and they had plenty of snow and almost 3/4 of the mtn open for skiing/riding.
Mammoth Mtn has the best and most varied “high-desert-type” skiing in the world! You get the best of all worlds there … lots of dry snow, incredible snowmaking ability and warmish desert winds blowing over in mid-day, enabling the skier/rider to just wear two layers on top or a vest. Of course, face masks are often needed on two of their lifts :=0
I learned to ski in Winter Park, CO on “poma” lifts and rope tows when lift tix were $4-$6 per day, lol.
And yeah, I had skinny Atomic Arc 195s and Dynastar 185s back in the day as well :=]
Now I ski on 173cm shaped “twin tips” and am now too old to be taught to ski backwards with them :=0
As soon as I get more time today, I’ll look at the developer case and its judgment. Does anyone know if the town already appealed?
July 3, 2012 at 12:05 PM #747163sdduuuudeParticipantIsn’t there an annual ski sale in San Diego somewhere – maybe in the Summer – where you can get deals on ski stuff ?

Yes, its at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and is usually scheduled the 2nd or 3rd Saturday in August. It features unsold inventory from sporting goods stores in the Western US from the last 3-4 model years.
I should be advertised in the UT.
July 3, 2012 at 4:29 PM #747173barnaby33ParticipantI was in Mammoth in march and the snow sucked. Hard icy and windy! I had several conversations with merchants there about how bad the season had been.
On the bankruptcy note this should be filed under local color. Mammoth has 3k full time residents. Now Vallejo was a big deal.
As to kids not wanting to ski or board thats crap. Its just too expensive. Its 500 dollars for a weekend of skiing and that’s if you own your gear.

July 3, 2012 at 4:38 PM #747175AnonymousGuestThe story can be summarized as “small town bets everything on single real estate development and loses.”
Not very interesting…
…especially since we can’t blame it on pensions.
July 3, 2012 at 5:29 PM #747176The-ShovelerParticipantWhen I was a twenty something, lift tickets were between 40 and 45 dollars (which was about 35% of my take home pay for the week), Bear mountain, summit and Wrightwood would routinely sell out, all the bottom chairs would take about 25-30 minutes to get through the line.
Now it’s about 60 -65 dollars and most of the chairs take 2-3 minutes to get through the line.
There are a lot less local skiers/boarders these days.July 3, 2012 at 6:54 PM #747185spdrunParticipantAmericans are getting too f**king fat to ski. Fat pigs have bad knees. End of story.
