Why not just have them buy a 30 day SIM card? And must global firms have some kind of roaming deal with AT&T. Its part of their open world alliance thing…

Yeah, the but problem is that all of them will need a 30 sim card, at $40 each.
http://www.mysimplemobile.com/plans-40-unlimited.aspxThe problem with that is they have to remove their home sim card and they will miss calls.
My experience is that people don’t mind roaming for text, but data roaming is expensive.
With Wifi, you can use Viber to communicate internationally.
I’m thinking of a mobile hotspot like this:
http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/cell-phone-details/?q_sku=sku5320262#fbid=H6WyKKERIx-%5B/quote%5DMost of these devices allow you to Ad Hoc a Wifi network but I think they will only accomadate 4 or 5 simuteanous connections. Meaning you will need more than one. With two device you should be ok if the devices can monitor the other channel and makes sure it wont interfer with the other devices operating frequency.

These people are guests from abroad so they will not have US mobile internet. Roaming for them will be very expensive.
They all have smart phones so I want to provide Internet access while we are on the move in the van, so people can stay connected.
What mobile hotspot service would you guys recommend for that?
The service should be reliable because I don’t want to deal with people’s questions and be the tech support guy.
If you have a stock nexus s running Gingerbread, you can turn on personal wifi network (IE tethering) so that others can use your phone like a personal wifi.
Settings->Wireless & network -> Teathering & portable hotspot-> Portable Wi-Fi hotspot.

For example, we had tried Verizon’s MiFi in 2009 when it first came out, but the actual battery life was terrible where we were going since apparently the signal was poor. The unit would get super-hot, so we returned it within the 30 day period and were liable only for the data we used. I know someone with a Galaxy Tab (7″ tablet) with the Verizon data-only plan for $30/2GB/mon, and its battery life seems to be longer than the MiFi’s.
November 7, 2011 at 1:15 PM #732388briansd1GuestAs CDMA Eng pointed out, the portable hotspot sold by the carriers only allow 5 connections.
I’m thinking about buying this router for use in connection with a 3G USB dongle.
I noticed that when I turn on personal hotspot on my iPhone (or Portable hotstop on Android), the data connection will get lost when a phone call comes in. I’ve only used it myself and have never shared with other people.
