Looking for good family area that I can commute from to El Cajon

I looked at Sky Ranch. That is a nice bunch of houses, both the new and existing ones. But I felt isolated having to come down the mountain to do anything.

Regarding 4S a work buddy said to be careful about 15 around there. He said it gets better by Mira Mesa. I also heard about Sabre Springs, but it sort of doesn’t feel like a community, but a pure bedroom community with nothing in it but the houses. Am I reading those two right?
