I like ABQ as well, scaredy. It’s very clean and the city has done a lot in recent years with the southwestern decor of its overpasses and landscaping. Excepting for the “Lordsburg/Deming corridor” (near the int’l border), I think ALL of NM is nice. I’m not sure I’d want to live there though, only because with that type of high, dry climate, CO wins hands down because it has so much more of everything to offer. However, it is quite a bit more expensive to live in CO.
scaredy, for “retirement purposes,” I think ABQ and surrounds (even Santa Fe, Farmington or Aztec, NM) would be preferable to Temecula (but NOT the CA coast), simply due to having to deal with MUCH less people on a daily basis. All of these places have all the modern conveniences without the “captive audience” population.
For a person who “doesn’t get out much,” I just put another 3800+ miles on my vehicle a few weeks ago, again passing thru ABQ twice ;=].

ctr, I haven’t been to any of the cities you mention here. I realize that SD is not as old as some of them so doesn’t have the “history” behind its neighborhoods that the northeast does. I’ve lived almost all my life in Cali but have traveled by vehicle to 17 states and by plane to 3 more.
Different strokes for different folks. You can’t have everything you want in one city. SD has the weather and that will never change. SD also has a very quaint coastline like no other which one can view from home in their spare time if they have the means and the desire to purchase or rent such a property.
I meant it when I said you should check out Durango and even the more populous cities in CO. I think it is perfect for you (and your biz).

ParticipantI would never live in Durango CO. It is in the middle of freaking nowhere. I have been to Telluride and Durango Mnt before. Great ski resorts & gorgeous area but I would never live there. The SD coast is NOT quaint! There goes your lack of taste again. Were you raised in a barn? Cape Cod has a quaint coastline, Maine has a quaint Coast line, the Hamtons has a quaint coastline, the outer banks of North Carolina has a quaint coastline…SD does NOT have a quaint coastline… it is mostly overbuilt ugly crap. OB is a sh*thole, PB is full of the mental midgit MTV frat crowd with Denny’s right by the beach, La Jolla is plastic/Beverly Hills-ish. I will give you Cardiff and Encinitas …those are pretty nice coastal towns. Especially Encinitas west of hwy 5. Oceanside is a piece of sh*t IMO. I don’t like Carlsbad. IB is an armpit.

I have been there many times as own a rental house there. I like New Mexico in general…it has a cool kind of counter culture, nice native american art, like the green and red chile, great sunsets. But ABQ has some real nasty eye sore sprawl areas. I could never live there. I like to vacation in Santa Fe and Taos though:) But ABQ has some legendary 1960’s-1970’s nasty sprawl.

That is a quaint, very attractive place that is NOT cookie cutter, generic and commercialized like San Diego. Santa Fe is one of my top U.S. cities for character along with:
-Burlington VT
-Charlottesville VA
-Boston MA
-Seattle WA
-San Francisco
-Boulder CO
-Madison WI
-Portsmouth NH
-Portland OR

November 3, 2012 at 12:35 PM #753686ParticipantSF can get old. I lived in the Bay Are for 18 years, a lot of that in SF. SF is not really a real city anymore. It’s just kind of fake city for hipsters and high tech millionaires. There aren’t a lot of families or kids in SF. I think I read where SF has the lowest number of children of any major city in the U.S. But, SF does have very attractive architecture with the Edwardians and Victorians. Much more attractive neighbords than SD. It is undeniably a gorgeous and walkable city and SD is not. But the congestion sucks, you get no summer, and the parking sucks.
Now talking about architecture, in SD we have places like Claremont. Claremont is an example of a place that has a great location close to the coast, downtown and La Jolla but IMO is dead ugly. The houses are like Mississippi sharecropper shacks. The worst of the 1950’s crap that was thrown up fast for a quick buck and these ugly 1950’s-1970’s strip centers for your downtowns in Claremont. I would put Kearny Mesa and Serra Mesa also in that Claremont category for zero character ugly 1950’s time warp. And these are $400k houses! And San Carlos is another area of SD that is considered a good middle class area of SD. But the houses are also clapboard 1950’s-1960’s ugly pieces of crap with more shitty strips centers for shopping with your 7-11 as the “anchor boutique”. The views of Cowles Mnt is the only attractive thing about it.

One of the things about SF that I think is an eyesore is the huge amount of overhead lines on many streets … in every direction. Since it is built on “a collection of rocks” it’s probably not realistic to expect it will ever have very much buried cable … if any at all.
As far as the wind blowing, SF and Chicago rival each other in this dept. But Chicago is undoubtedly MUCH colder with MUCH stronger winds. So SF wins the weather contest.
I have never been to Chicago but have seen many pictures and heard many stories. Yes, Chicago and even some of its suburbs are very beautiful, ESP around the lake. And SF has breathtaking views in every direction :=] There is no place like it on earth.

ParticipantI agree that if someone doesn’t like a particular place–they should definitely move–especially in CA–where many more will be passing through–just as many before them have.
Having lived all over the country and all over the world, IMO, there is no absolutely “perfect place,” when you factor in all of the elements. You just have to get as close as you can for your individual tastes–for us, that was RSF.
I think the level of life you are financially capable of living is also a factor, when it comes to your level of happiness in a given place.
If money’s no problem, you can pretty much find what you want anywhere you go, and, of course, the opposite it also true.
In the final analysis, everyone should just live wherever they want to live, and enjoy their lives.

There are many areas that have just as breathtaking views as SF. SD have a few places that have views just as good as SF and the weather is better. Some are actually much better. ParticipantI never expected such an anti-SD vibe here. I think the lack of character filled quality safe neighborhoods with good schools is really the problem. California has them but they tend to be way outside the price range of the average middle-class person Or even upper-middle-class for that matter. I know San Luis Obispo has such neighborhoods and they’re not quite so outrageously expensive but it seems for California to live the way it should you have to live in a small town. At the end of the day it really comes down to how much you value consistently it good weather. I personally prefer seasons and dramatic weather events, I find it quite interesting. It makes you go out on the days that are perfect sunny 70° and make sure you enjoy the fullness of it, Without taking it for granted. But I can understand why others may not be so sanguine about the weather.
