Being thin and looking good is one of the easiest thing we can do to distinguish ourselves from others.
Brian: Join the Marine Corps! You can be thin, look good and serve your country!
Ooh – rah!

Images of “People of WalMart” came to mind after reading your post. Ugh! Yes, I miss the olden days. When I was 8 or 9 (back in the early/mid 70s) I was supposed to go to downtown with my dad. Right before we left the house, he said “You’re wearing those old jeans? You can’t go to downtown like that!”
Yes, it was the 70s, but dad was brought up in an earlier, more conservative time.
Growing up (also in the 1970s to early 1980s), we always dressed up for Mass on Sunday, followed by brunch after. The term “Sunday best” actually meant exactly that.
Dinner was another family get-together where you cleaned up and didn’t wear anything scruffy. My mom was ruthless when it came to enforcing good manners (no elbows on the table, use the right utensils, be polite, etc).
I see people going to church now in shorts and flip-flops and I’ll admit I find that disappointing.
I’d agree with Brian over the loss of manners and courtesy; what the nuns would be call “good deportment”.

Why don’t you change parishes, Allan?
I, myself, switched to Church of the Holy Mattress. I actually had trouble dealing with the nonstop (loud) conversations going on all around me.

We actually have the same problem with the CHM.
