I would look at the miracle of compound interest on the HOA fee over time (20-30 years) and see what you think about that. If you can live with it and the corresponding quality of life there is worth paying for, then by all means, jump in.

It is a matter of taste. What irks you and me is somewhat inconsequential to others or at least not enough to stop them.
Where else in the county can they get a new home and that sort of school district?
