hawk: Teachers on average make about 50K a year, so that means you make 80K a year, give or take few thousand dollar. I thought lawyers make more than that. Maybe because you just graduated from law school? Just curious.
June 7, 2007 at 2:40 PM #57632ibjamesParticipantfor the realtors that are here, how often do you run into people like hawk? Is 130k combined for 27-28yrs old normal?
I still think the people that browse these boards are of higher intelligence in life and their positions. I can’t imagine a 130k salary being common. Maybe I am just one of the j6packs that is sipping champagne with everyone and then returning my rental tux and going back to my trailer. Acting like I am going towards my car but really just heading to the bus stop.
If we were talking about 80-100 combined I could see that, I just can’t see 130 as a standard.

FYI, the legal market in SD is not that great here compared to LA and San Fran. If you are a top performing male (or woman who doesnt want to have kids)who wants to work at a large firm you can do well. For me I didnt want to work my butt off to make partner and then at that age if i could have kids at that point they would literally be raised in day care due to the amount of hours you have to put in.
Many of my friends from law school only make 60-80. Hopefully it will get better as we get older and more experience. I am doing pretty well for the govt sector and I like my job.

Obviously, the “average” wage earner trying to get into the housing market in the next few years is going to find it very difficult! That is why I started looking at this blog. I realized that if me and my husband, making over 6 figures, living a frugal life, could barely afford a 2 or 3 bdrm condo something wasnt right.
My problem now is I work downtown and live in Encinitas. Funny thing was when I graduated law school I was offered a job in Carlsbad and I thought that would be too long of a communte for me living in PB. I may look for something in North County in the future, the coaster is nice when I can take it but it wears on you.

June 7, 2007 at 7:43 PM #57753AnonymousGuestGreat Topic. I follow several sites and really like this one.
In past 5 years we saved up around 200K. I have been making around 250K……..but I am very conservative and know it could end tommorrow. For sure I can get a good job making around 120K or better…….but if you ever get that great job like I have now…….DO NOT start spending like you will have it forever. You might not.
Last June we sold home and are RENTING. I sold just because I got a full price offer…..and only moved a few miles away. Made about 300K on that house and added it to savings.
I love to play the stock market…….but for past month I have sold practically everything and parked the money in some short term interest index funds. I was getting worried that I made the wrong choice as I was missing out on big stock gains. The last 3 days makes me feel better about the decision though.
So today that means 500K cash saved……..and my wife is bugging me to buy a house.
I am AFRAID to buy a house in Southern California. I can see getting stuck in 1.2 Million dollar home……and then see it drop to 850K in just a few years………GOOD BYE savings.
I’m 37 and been saving hard…..don’t want to have housing steal it back from me.
SO I RENT!!!!

June 8, 2007 at 9:37 AM #57885ibjamesParticipantMy sister makes 48k in her clerkship, so not all lawyers make great money. She looks at it as a step towards her future so she’s making the sacrifice now.
I used to do consulting and a lot of my clients were small firms. I was talking to one lady as I was working on her computer. She seemed nice, but tired. I asked about her kids, and she said, “in my profession you are either a good lawyer or a good mom, I’m a good lawyer” needless to say I didn’t ask about her kids again. You can tell she had guilt. She had a million+1 pictures of her kids on the walls. Probably the only way she can see them.
