Zeigeist,
That’s exactly my problem with this program. This program isn’t trashing hard to find really old cars that are true gas guzzlers. Alot of the cars/trucks being trashed are in driveable conditions with ample parts that could be recycled and redistributed to others who otherwise can’t afford to fix their cars.
I would have just preferred IF the gov just handed out $4500 voucher trade in to the first X people that purchased a car that met a minimum MPG rating and been done with it. $..Factor in the cost of killing the engine, the pollution, the carbon footprint bring in a car wrecker, compact the car, and haul it to a scrapyard and multiple that by 1billion/$4000 => 250000 cars, more if an additional $2billion is approved.
Just ridiculous waste of good recyclable stuff. I wouldn’t have mind picking up that BMW 735 engine for a kit car project…
There are better ways to blow an engine by actually using them…shitheads.
bsharma,
That volvo they destroyed was an S80, most likely a S80/T6.

August 1, 2009 at 3:23 PM #440050ZeitgeistParticipantI feel exactly the same way and I am glad it will run out of money soon. It is really big cars that are targeted, not just old, beater cars. They want us driving weenie, birth control cars (as TG calls them). It is all about being fair and everyone having the same thing. It will never work out that way as Arraya points out. You will not touch the rich. During the Great Depression, the super rich had some of the coolest rides. Duesenberg did find customers such as Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Greta Garbo and James Cagney. Monarch, kings, queens, and the very wealthy accounted for the rest of the sales. And they always will.

I looked around and found Volvos with more than $100K routinely sell above $3000-$4000. Another amazing thing is people selling Volvos & Saabs with 200K, 300K and even 400K miles on them! Most US engineered cars would reach old age by 100K and surely die before 200K. I think this is a true testament to good European engineering. They should collect all this disablement videos and advertise as “Look, Our cars are indestructible. Even U.S. Government designed procedure can’t kill it fast”. That would surely have an impact on geeks like me.
