I guess they are hoping for 2k, that doesnt mean they will get it. Ive seen some places festering on caigslist for many months losing the owners money.
Saying that, SD is expensive so good luck finding something suitable for the price you can afford. I would have thought a house in SD would rent for closer to 2700 for anything that doesnt stink.

For $2000, you can find a slew of quality rentals.

August 2, 2007 at 8:57 AM #69481blue_skyParticipantHa, rentals in San Diego a “Pain”? Dream on! I love the rental market here, it’s so slack. I can get a place in any area on the drop of a hat. Contrast that to where I grew up, where I had to take a crappy third floor apt right at a major railway crossing because that’s all there was!
I’m now a landlord in that same city and on a typical day there are less than 10 units for rent in the entire city! We get calls from people living on the damn street who can’t find a rental. Typically > 20 showings on every vacancy we have.
BTW, that’s what rent control gets you after a while. It’s such a broken system. We get to pick sweet tenants though.

August 2, 2007 at 9:13 AM #69485ToneParticipantJust be glad you’re not living in L.A. I sold my house and was looking for a place to rent in Westchester, just north of LAX. All the rental homes are priced over $3k a month. In fact, we looked at one property that was thrashed by three college students, and the slum lord who owned it was bemoaning the fact that he couldn’t get quality renters.
Hello?
The place had no gardener and was overgrown with weeds, the exterior paint was chipped and peeling, there was no threshold under the front door, and the washing machine run off hose was sticking out the kitchen window (all stuff that’s his responsibility!). He wanted $3k a month for this three bedroom shanty shack.
Incredulously, there were three college girls waiting outside to give him a deposit on the place. He rented it that week.
With the lack of parks, terrible public transit, bottlenecked traffic, and outrageous rents, LA seriously sucks. Once my lease is up on the house I’m renting I’m outta’ this friggin place.

We feel your pain..Just went through the same thing looking at lots of crap holes every weekend for about a month. In the end we found a good place and it can be done so don’t give up hope. At one time, just to ease the tension in the car after a particularly hideous rental hunting weekend my husband actually suggested we BUY a place – we all burst out laughing in the car! When compared to buying right now, looking at crappy rentals was actually a preferred option!
Most landlords are on the crack pipe right now because it’s summer and they seem to think they can rent anything to people with kids who want to get settled before school starts – don’t get caught up in the drama if you can help it. My very un-professional opinion having only been a renter for a year now is that in a few weeks people will become more reasonable.
For what it’s worth we’re leaving our Scripps Ranch home for another one without a pool – I can put you in touch with our landlord/property manager if you want to check out this place. It will be available 9/1 – at least that’s when we’ll be out and have had the cleaning companies in to clean and do carpets. You can e-mail me at ourdoublewide at yahoo dot com and I can give you more info. as I do not believe she has listed it yet since we just gave notice yesterday.
