There is no such thing as an unpunished crime. Do you think these peoples kids and other folks will really have much respect for them or any money they have?
I am very close to a situation like this and the people don’t seem that happy even though the big lifestyle goes on. No consumption fad is left un-abused. It is like they are trying to fill some kind of hole that the rest of us should be extremely grateful for not having. Other than this, they are really decent hardworking people.
The system goes easy on them because they do not want to discourage healthier minded people from taking debt. Kind of like liquor stores sell booze to alcoholics.
Saying “I should have done it” is just kind off bitter. You can still do it. If I have a chance to weigh in on the topic in a way that matters I will definitely speak out against it. Other than that, it’s just whining.

August 15, 2010 at 9:27 AM #591075bearishgurlParticipantWell, I must have “doormat” written on my forehead because some of these people have come whining to me when they wanted to know what to do about harassing calls and letters and their credit becomes pockmarked from their failure to continue making payments on their HELOC’s (AND unsecured CC’s/loans, as well).
When I suggest things like, “Why don’t you sell your boat to satisfy this lender and get them off your back?” they look at me like I’m some kind of a killjoy . . . like I’VE lost it . . . LOL, I give up :={
horse + water = thirst

Do you get paid in some fashion to give them that council on how to do that crooked business, or do you do it out of the goodness of your heart?Unlike you, when they came to me, I told them what I think of the situation in no uncertain terms. When they said they wanted help, I said I thought that would be a terrible use of the nation’s capacity for charity. I did not offer alcohol to an alcoholic.
These people should have more stuff taken away, maybe not be able to homestead, but at the very least have to attend a couple of thousand consumer anonymous meetings. We don’t control all that so why wallow in it, taking the focus off how great our own lives are?
All I am trying to say is why put personal, but completely undirected focus and energy on this subset of people to any meaningful degree? I do understand the need to vent once in a while of course. I admit to having done so here, on this very topic.
Edit,
With that, I am off this thread to go enjoy the good life.August 15, 2010 at 10:03 AM #591173NotCrankyParticipant[quote=bearishgurl]Well, I must have “doormat” written on my forehead because some of these people have come whining to me when they wanted to know what to do about harassing calls and letters and their credit becomes pockmarked from their failure to continue making payments on their HELOC’s (AND unsecured CC’s/loans, as well).
