New Zealand’s gonna be looking pretty good about then.

MaA, are you an NZ citizen? Earlier you mentioned were born in 67, which makes you 40 this year. In 10-15 years, you’ll be between 50-55 which is gonna make it damn hard for you to emigrate to NZ unless you marry an NZ native. Priority is given to young immigrants there since they’ll pay taxes longer and contribute more to the society. FYI, the absolute max age for skilled migrants is 55 in NZ, so if you’re seriously thinking about it, I’d recommend getting started now.

You Gen Xers can benefit by our aging. Because of the size of our group, we’re gonna need a whole lot more Alzheimer’s nursing homes, mortuaries, etc.

It’s also worth noting that we did not ask to be born, and certainly not in such numbers. You can blame the “Greatest Generation” for that. I remember the couple next door…they were considered weird because they had only one child. “What’s wrong with them?” was common neighborhood gossip.

And getting a “teenager” job was rough. I applied at the local McDonald’s and I was number 40 on the waiting list. We faced that kind of competition all through our early adulthoods, even after college.

Some boomers are more equal than others…

Construction At…, you raised some good points, even if you do seem a little too sorry for yourself. I just want to point out that not all boomers are in the same situation.

Early boomers
Speaking broadly, early boomers had less competition than average for good jobs, and if they saved diligently and bought houses and stocks, they were rewarded with returns on those asset that are the greatest in history. When they start retiring very soon, they will sell their stock portfolios at enormous prices and buy retirement homes in beautiful out-of-the-way places at modest prices. The people who do best are always the ones that get in earliest.

Late boomers
I am a late boomer. I studied full-time until I was 27, and by the time I could afford stocks or a house, they were so expensive I couldn’t bring myself to pluck down the money. I just worked harder, 80-100 hours a week. As my income and savings advanced, so did the prices. I still haven’t bought my first home. When I’m old and I sell the stocks that I recently purchased at prices 10 times higher than 1980 prices, they will probably have depreciated a large amount after 15 years of selling by earlier boomers.

So it would be nice to choose when you’re born. But on the other hand, I was lucky to be born into a family that was kind and loving and gave me a good education and lived in the first world in the 20th century. Not a bad hand, after all, and to boot I’ll enjoy a few new inventions my older boomers won’t live to see.

Well, I have to disagree as well about boomers being primarily responsible. In my observations, the boomers I know, are working longer to keep up with the rising costs of living. They are living a lot closer to their means if not below, especially compared to Gen-xrs, like me.

My peers are buying homes with interest only loans, 0% down, and financing everything else in their lives. Last time I checked, it was only until recently that you didn’t need a 20% cash down to buy a home. My parents(boomers) never heard of the 100% financing.

Gen-xers, are financing everything from fake boobs, to BMWs, and even their daily Coffee. We(genX) need to address these issues if we want to make it better. Its gonna take financial responsibility, patience, and people are going to have to sacrifice things. They need to realize that not everyone can live like the Osbourne’s, and even if you can, it won’t make you a better person.

I don’t see an end to this trend anytime soon, so its gonna take an economic correction to teach us the lesson. Times will be tough on some people, but over all I think it will be good for the sake of our country.

Hating the boomers for buying at low prices, come on… WE are the ones who bid the prices up to insane levels with insane loans, and actually continued to BUY the homes. If anything, they deserve the equity from our insane credit bubble, they are going to need it to fight the insane inflation that we have also created for them.

If anything, I wish the boomers could teach the genXers a bit about saving, and responsibility, boomers may not be perfect, but to me, their personal finance is much more logical than ours.

God no. Please no. I think I speak for millions when I say that I am deathly sick of the counterculture sixties. The music, the war, the protests, all the hagiography – it’s not a reflection of the era’s importance but the self-importance of the generation who hung on the bus as it trundled along down the same old rutted road of history.. I’m tired of hearing about the boomers’ days of whine and neuroses; I’m weary of ritual genuflection to their musical icons; I’m utterly disinterested in most of the pop-cult trivia they hold so dear. We’ll probably be better off when that demographic pig has been excreted from the python so we can see the era clearly without choking on the smoke.
