Participant
We are going to have a contest and the winner gets a decent bottle of wine. I just got back from a potential clients and saw their year end paystubs for last year. I did not list the property because it didnt fit what I thought I could do. Its a dual income household. Both work in the public sector. One in health care and the other in public safety. Lets see who can guess the 2011 gross earnings for the household not including any benefits paid for by their employer.
Have at it and dont be afraid of going over.
Contest runs through Monday.
Why were potential clients showing you their paystubs? Maybe I’m naive, but why would someone show a person they were interviewing to hire *their* paystubs? Or do people normally show private, fiscal data in interviewing agents?Mortgage brokers, maybe… real estate brokers they haven’t hired yet? Seems far fetched.

Omg… that is funny.January 13, 2012 at 9:06 AM in reply to: OT: Public employees: mistreated and misunderstood OR leeches to productivity ? #735791UCGal
ParticipantThere are dead weight, lazy employees in the private sector also. Stereotypes, both positive and negative, can be found in both public and private sector. I bet FLU’s user name was based on a private sector experience.
I have a nephew who is one of the brightest, hardest working folks I know… works for the GAO. He worked on wall street out of Wharton and realized he wanted to serve more than he wanted to make money just for the sake of money…. because he’s bright and hard working he’s risen through the GS levels quickly… but still makes half of what he would have if he’d stayed on the street.
The problem with broad generalizations is there are too many discrete points to prove them wrong.

ParticipantSuziebee –
I agree completely that Hawthorne’s seminar program is exceptional. (My son is now in your daughter’s class.) However, it is not necessarily indicative of the GATE program state wide, county wide, or district wide. Heck, it’s not even indicative of the seminar program district wide.Seminar programs vary from school to school. Parents need to do research, go to the seminar open houses (even if you don’t have the GATE results yet for your 2nd grader), and figure out what teachers/programs will be right for their child.
Just a heads up to any parents of 2nd graders. Do your research and paperwork NOW.
* Put in a choice application to an out of cluster school just so you have one on file. You don’t have to use it – but you can change it to a different school if your child tests seminar AND you decide on a program outside your neighborhood cluster. It’s much harder to choice into a different cluster’s program if you don’t have ANY application on file.
* The seminar programs often have “open house” nights BEFORE you have the Gate test results. This is your chance to assess the programs, and express interest in programs outside your cluster. Use the links below to identify seminar programs that look like a good fit.
The different seminar programs are described here:
http://www.sandi.net/cms/lib/CA01001235/Centricity/Domain/89/SeminarProgramDesBooklet1112.pdf
and here
http://sandi.net/cms/lib/CA01001235/Centricity/Domain/89/SeminarBrochure11-12-Eng.docIf you identify a seminar program you like – talk to the teacher, find out about their open house, sit in on a class. The programs vary and what works for some, doesn’t work for others.
Again – don’t just look at API scores. Look at specific seminar teachers and programs. API scores are school wide. Seminar programs are limited to 1 teacher per grade at the elementary school. The teacher is the key part. A bad teacher can set a kid back significantly. A good teacher can make a lifetime change in a student.

Participant
Looks that way – thanks UC. I am pretty surprised at the asking prices for the nicer 4 bedroom homes – thought we could get into something for around $3-3.5K but it looks more like $4-4.5K. Oh well.
Rents are kind of like list prices of homes for sale… they’re a starting point for negotiation.Back in my college days (when dinasaurs roamed the earth) rents weren’t negotiable. Now, they totally are if you have good credit and income.

Not that I want more people here – I just understand the draw.
Interesting… From the link Illinois had the most net outbound. And the article also suggests that moving vans are more indicative of executive relo’s, vs the general population.
That fits the parking lot where I work. Lots of Illinois license plates on high end cars in the parking lot and more new faces suit types on the newly remodeled executive floor.
Technically corporate hq is in Libertyville… but I’m not sure if any execs are actually there anymore.

How can you find fault with finding happiness from within? It’s a lot harder to be a good spouse, a good parent, a good neighbor… if you are miserable and wallowing.
uh, life is not that simple – not to me anyway.
How are you finding that happiness “from within”?
Does your happiness come at the expense of someone else’s?
If not great…
IMHO, finding happiness “from within” means learning how to, quite literally, “count your blessings.” If you find contentment with what you have, especially if you really appreciate the most basic and simple things in life, you will find happiness.
It seemed to me that scaredy was pretty much making this very point. There was nothing shallow or self-centered in his comment.
Yes, this.
Being happy at the expense of others is not good. It’s also not independent of other conditions – which is what WW/Scaredy suggested.Being happy with what you have, who you are, how you live your life…. that can be very good.
It’s not about stuff, money, fame, whatever. It’s happiness from within. And that is not at the expense of others.

ParticipantIt seems like most landlords (including private homeowners) use Craigslist these days.

ParticipantI think BAC recently proved that consumers have a ripping point wrt fees. And Verizon learned yesterday the same lesson. (Not a bank but Verizon was going to charge a fee for paying your bill by CC or debit, and reversed that decision 24 hours after it was announced because of the outcry.)
My pet issue with banks is unilaterally imposed binding arbitration agreements. Wells Fargo is imposing this in February, retroactively. Think about this… by being a customer, you are agreeing to give up your right to a court trial for disputes and are forced into a privatized, corporate friendly system. No class actions if they’ve screwed over all customers. No recourse if you get an arbitrator who ignores facts of the case. Schwab and sdccu don’t have arbitration clauses.
