It’s a great time to shop for a Suburban!
Just drive slow and you will save some gas. The savings in gas may not exceed the hit you will take swapping cars.

trexParticipantStill lurking, but less frequently. I guess it seems to me that the housing market is on its way down, and we won’t buy for a year, I haven’t been keeping my finger on the pulse of the market as much. Plus there has been alot of OT posts, and I’m a bit narrow in my interests.

trexParticipantThanks for the link, Marion. That wasn’t the video, but holy cow – that one is worse! In the video where he talks about Hillary, he makes specific reference to 401k’s and such.
SDEngineer – I stand corrected. However, I’d bet that we are still near the top in “potential” mobility, versus actual mobility. Measures of mobility correlate parents and kids’ earnings. So countries undergoing dramatic change see big mobility.
But how much of this is choice? Most posters here could be loaded if we had chosen different lives – law school or MBA and a cutthroat career – instead of engineering or education. I don’t feel trapped in the middle class. I like it here. I know how to move up or down but I like my job.

trexParticipantAnyone see the Catholic priest’s rant against Hillary in that church in Chicago? According to him, if you don’t give up your 401(k), all trappings of success, and give them to the black community you are just perpetuating racism.
Social mobility is higher in the United States than almost every other country. It’s not perfect, and we could do more to encourage educational achievement in low income communities. Vocational programs, longer school days, more college prep, mentoring, and my favorite – a class on personal finance. But I’m not suing for reparations for how my relatives got screwed in southern Europe over the last couple hundred years. We have to just let it go. Aren’t the Shias and Sunnis still pissed off over who killed who 1,000 years ago? Not a particularly productive attitude.
I’ll probably vote for McCain. I think markets and free trade and NAFTA and capitalism in general are actually good things.
