ParticipantI have an idea for a business model. The valley already has a huge wedding industry in place. Tourism was at 530 million back in 2006, I’m sure it’s higher now. It’s a destination wedding location and a destination golf location, plus it has the largest casino/resort in the state. The 30+ wineries and the casino are filled with bachelorette parties on every spring weekend. What it lacks is the facilities for a bachelor party. I’m part of a middle aged group of friends that take golf trips from time to time. The places we go also have what can only be called gentlemen’s clubs. The nearest one to temecula is more than 30 miles away and they aren’t that nice. Casinos, golf, destination weddings…..add it up, a gentleman’s club would make a killing if it could navigate the conservative poltical climate that bounced hooters out of town. But you are a lawyer, certainly you can find some case law for the cause. I’ve got tools and saws. We build a barn at your place, a bar, instal a stripper pole. Watch risky business, then watch porky’s, it will be fun. I say, don’t even tell the wife what were up to, we’ll take notes and later it becomes the screenplay for next summer’s blockbuster movie. Tg and scardey’s ultimate adventure, it’s almost a copy of 2 1/2 men minus the kid and I already have the nat nast shirts. Forget the humanure and the old people weddings with harps, let’s go bada bing club, high end of course.
Think about it………..

ParticipantMore than likely you do not need a permit to host your friend’s wedding at your home, it only becomes a business when you charge money, advertise, etc. It’s best to talk to and/or invite any neighbor that would be impacted. Most neighbors are cool with the “once every few years” kind of thing but will not be cool with a wedding factory next door. You probably wouldn’t like it next to you either.
I do not know exactly where you ended up buying, I thought you were looking ont he West side of the freeway. If you ended up on the East side, especially if you are in the boundaries of the wine country, the path to the permits is easier there because it is zoned for that in most areas. There are probably a dozen weddings a day out there during the spring and the wineries have the facilities for receptions, food, night weddings and liquor licenses.
If you are in an entirely residential area and not surrounded by vines or orchards, keep in mind weddings can be loud. Bad dancing, taffeta and wedding bands/dj’s are only enjoyable to those who are drinking, even then it’s debatable.

ParticipantIs it really over? Are there any clauses that you can invoke to get out of the deal? I am just in awe that you actually did it, never thought you would. For everyone else it has been a math problem, for you, it seemed more like a phobia.
Since today is thanksgiving and you probably have the keys, relax and enjoy the ride and congrats!!!
See, it wasn’t so bad.temeculaguy

ParticipantIf you are doing it for purely financial reasons, then follow the above advice about the least impact and hassle on your life. But if you doing it for the education/adventure or what you referred to as “fun” then you want to use a different set of rules. Ask yourself “what do I need to learn” and fill that void. Avoid the classifieds and just keep your eyes open in social settings for potential roomates, having a mutual aquaintance helps getting the true scoop on someone.
While my roommate experiences were all in my formative years and I would not even consider it now, here are the three roommates scenarios I believe that enhanced my life the most, these were not friends and sometimes they were friends of friends or friends of existing roommates, all were from college days when stuff didn’t seem to matter so much.
1. I had a roommate from a different religion, socio-economic background and frame of mind. In those two years, I learned a lot. He was a good dude.
2. I had another roommate who was a really good looking guy, he was “model good looking” and dumb like rain man. Wherever we went, whenever we had parties, women flocked to him, but after a short while of talking to him, most lost interest. But they are already drinking and already gussied up, perfect scenario for an average looking but witty guy like myself. After a while I just called him “bait.”
3. The best roommate was the non political, non angry lipstick lesbian. I was young, I knew very little about women (not just sexually, but mentally and emotionally). She wasn’t guarded, didn’t worry about giving up the secrets of her gender, didn’t feel like she had a group to defend and never had I met a more candid person. She had the mind of a man with the body of a woman, it was like having a spy. I had the other team’s playbook in my livingroom and there was no better wingman/wingwoman. Oh, and her friends….I have to stop writing or I am going to start crying, damn you brian for binging this up, that only lasted one semester and she moved to another city, I still have unanswered questions 20 years later that I didn’t ask when I had the chance. Damn, Damn, Double Damn.
