ParticipantI would consider waitinghawk a respected bear and his decision to buy was extremely calculated, just in certain markets. He points out that the various areas have different timelines and his choice for a primary residence is a year behind where his vacation home it. I totally agree with his observations, some areas have lost the bulk of their values while others still hold tighter to their 2005 prices. I would be more comfortable buying in Eastlake or Temecula right now than Carmel Valley or Calrsbad because the latter have yet to experience their meltdown and they will have it, just further down the tracks.
My tone has changed from “waiting for the right price” to “waiting for the right house.” But I also want to wait to get to the other side of the spring bounce because the better ones are getting snapped up too quickly right now, I’m in no mood for a bidding war, these shenannigans will end soon.

ParticipantThat silver one in the picture is the roadster, being delivered now or soon and completely sold out. With regards to performance vs gas, it outperforms, 0-60 in 4.0 or similar, will outrun a lambo or ferrari at twice the cost but it completely sold out to celebs and the same ilk that buy ferrari’s. They only made it to get street credibility and to prove that a car that gets over 100 mpg equivalent cost (that was when gas was $2.50) can perform and not be what they call a “punishment car” and what I call a “birth control car.” Their white star was supposed to be similar to a 5 series bmw and go for 50k but their real invention was the battery and powerplant technology, how to take those high end remote control sports cars and make them big. They will likely never become an auto giant but go with a microsoft or intel business model and just make and license the power and battery for major auto makers. They don’t make much more than that on their cars now, having lotus build the frame and body for the roadster. It’s a silicon valley startup so that’s my guess where things will end up and the Daimler talks is the first evidence that they are leaning that way.
I know you’d prefer a prius but there are many people out there who see their car as more than just a mode of transportation, the prius rules at the pump but fails everywhere else. Plus it’s 50 mpg isn’t enough, tesla technology would take the prius beyond 100 mpg equivalent and it’s my guess that it will be incorporated into it. Or if someone else gets their first, it will put the prius out of business if you can get a mercedes c class to get 100 mpg for 40k, game over.

ParticipantIt’s a terrible floorplan, I toured them new and looked at many repo/auction ones recently. The three story model has two separate sets of stairs, one in the front and one in the rear, the third floor does not connect and possibly the second either, so to get from one room on the third floor to another, it’s down two flight and then accross the main floor then up two. It also has a tandem offset garage so you can really only get one car into it and then negotiate backward to get out and not park anything in the driveway, which explains the large number of cars on the street.
The other two floorplans are wacky as well. One had a neat below ground wine cellar but they closed it a few times in the model because of flooding so I imagine they all have problems, this isn’t really basement country. They are nice looking but more flash than substance, a little gimmicky and in a tough market it is these types that fall hardest. Also, none have views and many have giant slopes. Large quantities of monster trucks as well. While it is in the redhawk hoa, it is so far removed from it that is isn’t really considered redhawk by many locals since it is on the other side of vail ranch and North of Morgan, it’s kinda like a penninsula of redhawk without the benefit of being near the golf course or having views.
Bearvine, good to see you around.

Participantbsharma, actually amusement parks and local attractions are a terrible indicator of the economy, there can actually be a reverse effect. I’ve read a number of studies that when discretionary income falls, vacations and outings aren’t eliminated, they are downgraded. An example is that a family who is accustomed to taking their vacation in hawaii or europe will not forgo their vacation but disneyland, camping or something similar that does not involve air travel will be taken instead. Southern Californian’s with less vacation money will be “rediscovering” local vacations at a fraction of the cost, even if gas were to quadruple, it’s cheaper than flying. So when you see some local attraction having increased attendance it is actually a sign of financial distress. Cruises sometimes also benefit because they are more economical and the shorter ones to a greater extent. There are a lot of people, like myself who are unaffected by an economic downturn directly in their paychecks but their psyche is affected because of what they see and hear, I’m not ready to spend my vacation at home burying nickels in the backyard but I’m also looking to spend less than half of what I would have in the past and the extra $50 in gas for a local vacation is nothing compared to a $5000 vacation for a family I would have taken in years past. I haven’t been to Sea World in ten years but this may be the year I go. Currency values are another factor, it’s cheap for foriegners to come here and expensive for us to leave.
