Those above ground muni trams in SF were awful, usually packed to the brim with people and barely moving faster than a brisk walk.
We rode those once. It was relatively empty when we boarded but as we went through Chinatown that thing was wall to wall people. It would have been impossible to fit a sheet of paper between me and those surrounding me. I couldn’t even see where my wife was on that little tram.
That’s the only time I can honestly say I’ve felt claustrophobia. I can recall the thought going through my head that if I lived in SF there is no way in hell I would ride the tram. I’d rather walk.

I agree with everything except for:

I’d rather go back to being sleepy San Diego myself.
I like where we’re heading and don’t mind just being the next Silion Valley. Maybe BioTech Valley?
BioTech Valley is probably more accurate.
I have read that biotech expansion is pushing computer tech north to RB and Carlsbad.
So maybe both?
Makes a lot of sense. Tech can go anywhere and there is lots of nice housing and good schools up this way. Life sciences needs lab space of which there is lots more in Golden Triangle area plus access to labs at UCSD, Salk, teaching hospitals etc. I think our future is more tied to life sciences than tech.
That is probably true. But I think tech is a much larger field than life sciences so that’s why I think they are on equal footing. Could I be wrong? Sure, but I don’t give a f*ck. I’m about to head for the cashier’s window and kick back in retirement. It’s all umbrella drinks and sunglasses from here on out.
svelteParticipant
I dont live in Mira Mesa but I follow it and promote it because I see a great future for it. Ive never lived there and never will. I dont live in San Marcos and never will but it is on a market beating trajectory also.
I get it. Some may dismiss you as snooty but I don’t. I understand where you’re coming from. You’re coastal and will take the plusses and minuses that come with it. Me, I’d prefer to hang back a bit from the coast and rub elbows with more of the middle class. I have to tell you that has bit me in the ass a bit too…big dust-ups with a neighbor. But I’m a scrapper and can hold my own. Came out on top.
20 years ago I could see my trajectory and where we’d end up financially. I could have moved to the coast and been lower-middle class there – and have my kids feel sub-par. Or move to San Marcos and be upper-middle class or better and have my kids feel at least as good as the others, and probably better than that. I chose the latter.
Do I regret it? Nah. My kids are on trajectories to beat mine. When I’ve expressed regrets on my life, they’ve told me that the values and opportunities I’ve given them far outweigh any regrets I may have. That has made me a happy camper.
I don’t think you are wrong, I don’t think I’m wrong. Just different perspectives. That’s what makes the world fun.

svelteParticipantI sniffed around Zillow today.
A 20-30 yo 1900 SF home in San Marcos sold for $1.1M this month. Thinking it was an anomaly, I looked over other recent sales. Nope, not an anomaly.
Prices are absolutely insane. San Marcos is where normal middle-class folks can buy. Or at least *could* buy.
This can’t continue.
Either that or we are seeing some sort of seismic change in an extremely short time period.
Personally, I don’t think its healthy. It feels like we are well on our way to becoming the new silicon valley, given prices like these.
I’d rather go back to being sleepy San Diego myself.
svelteParticipant“A GoFundMe has now been set to help the couple rebuild. It was then shared on Facebook, by Lynne’s niece, Heather Balaban, who wrote: ‘My aunt Lynn and her husband Keith are the sweetest, most giving people I know.
…
‘Unfortunately, last night their home burnt to the ground, and they had no time to grab any of their belongings because they were evacuated in Laguna Niguel.’
As of 1.30pm EST on Thursday, the online fundraiser had raised $1,550 from seven donors to help the family.
Keith Morey told NBC Los Angeles that his Tesla was in his garage when the fire began but luckily neither him nor his wife were home when the fire made its approach. ”
…let me get this straight…they own a 4800 sf home worth many millions of dollars on a hilltop (I looked it up) with million dollar views that I’m sure is insured and they have a GoFundMe set up to get $50K?? Talk about entitlement!
Apparently they think they can’t settle for the free best things in life.
svelteParticipant

Dude … Have you seen the price of baby formula lately, assuming you can find some?????
I don’t envy anyone how had an infant right now.

svelteParticipant
A missile goes one way and has nowhere near the navigation capabilities. A drone can fly in assess a situation and then redirect and complete its mission based up data collection. It’s next level effective
“In military terminology,[1] a missile is a guided airborne ranged weapon capable of self-propelled flight usually by a jet engine or rocket motor. Missiles are thus also called guided missiles or guided rockets (when in rocket form). Missiles have five system components: targeting, guidance system, flight system, engine and warhead.”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missile
Modern missiles can also redirect after launch.
svelteParticipant“suicide drone” sounds like a modern buzzword name for “guided missile”.

Usually those warranties are for manufacturing defects, not normal wear from usage. Theye didn’t put that clause in the warranty?
svelteParticipant
I will eat raw nuts plus honey. Much cheaper.
Have you seen the price of raw nuts? Surely you don’t think that’s cheaper than a perfect bar!
svelteParticipantFor decades I made home-brewed Lipton tea. That was my go-to drink and I had it down to a science. People looked forward to stopping by for some of that tea. I’d make 2-3 gallons at a time.
But when I cut out caffeine and reached middle-aged so I had to watch my weight, I cut out tea and went to water.
I did miss the tea for a bit, but now I don’t even think about it. I probably don’t even remember the brewing mix I used to use.
svelteParticipantHere’s another way to think of it scaredy.
You, me, and most of the folks on this board have a pretty high stack of $$. Not rich, but not poor either. Either upper middle class or lower upper class.
We’ve done reasonably intelligent things with that cash: diversified, real estate, etc.
If things tank so bad that we are poor, over 95% of the population will be in way worse shape than we are. Way worse.
We are going to be just fine. No guarantee we’ll live high on the hog, but a good chance we will and if we don’t, it will be because of an event or events much bigger than we had control over and there would have been nothing we could have done anyway.
Let’s say you have $1M saved. You probably have much more. Things tank so your $1M is worth $1K in today’s dollars. Do you think that $3.50 you saved by not buying a perfect bar is going to make any difference at all? If $1M -> $1K then $3.50 -> $0.0035 or a third of a penny. You could have bought three perfect bars and just have spent a single cent.
Or perhaps worrying makes you feel better. In that case worry away!
