Participant1. Safe salary is better than no salary.
2. Teaching (I’ve tutored and done volunteer programs) is incredibly challenging, just differently than design work.I personally know several people who went from working at Bell Labs to teaching. Also, what kind of degree are we talking about? Someone with a Ph. D could teach at the university level.

ParticipantWhat about getting a teaching license additionally to your technical degree? Probably quite a bit of demand for maths/science/CS teachers who actually know their fields. And a tenured government job provides decent security. Hours and vaca aren’t bad either even if pay isn’t great.
And you’d be doing some good as well as making money. Also have enough time for side projects and travel if that turns you on.
Yeah, I realize that most people here don’t aspire to a “safe” public-sector job, but it’s another thing to consider.

ParticipantI have to say that you’re wrong. Maybe for SFH properties, but condos built in the 60s through 90s also fell hard.

ParticipantYet the 2008-2012 crash happened despite those owners.

ParticipantDo you want your kids riding a bike to school? Or walking outside? Or skiing? Or swimming?
All dangerous activities. You can’t live every fucking day of your life wrapped in bubble wrap. When it’s anyone’s time to go, they’ll go.

ParticipantWhen in the last 200 years has America not been based on immigration? We’re still below peak as far as foreign-born residents.
The period 1940-1990 was an anomaly.

ParticipantI rarely carry cash when I dine out. It’s a hassle.
Note that it’s also easier to cook your books and cheat on your business taxes…just saying.
I usually carry cash. Learned that the hard way after the 2003 NYC blackout and then Sandy. And I’d also never tip with a credit card. Too much risk of the tips being stolen by management.
Frankly, if people cheat on taxes, it’s none of my business. I’m not law enforcement, and I consider it everyone’s prerogative to choose their own level of honesty.
I don’t think a society where crime is impossible is desirable.

Participant(btw, “Hispanics” are actually Caucasians)
Really depends. There are plenty of Hispanics with African, Asian, or Native American ancestry as well.

ParticipantActually, you’d be surprised, I have. A few years back, an antiquities and rare book shop I had as a client imported someone with a history degree from France under the H1-B program.
I bet that some people with knowledge of rare languages also squeak in.

ParticipantCash only, 14oz “pints”, horrible service.
Cash only is a good thing. Less money for the bankster scum.

ParticipantI don’t have a problem with private use of the Confederate battle flag. Want to hang it in front of your house, make a video game with it, run a marathon wrapped in it? Fine. Freedom of expression.
But government organizations shouldn’t be using it. They only started using it in the 1940s as a protest against Supreme Court decisions mandating integration, so it’s a really awkward and offensive symbol for a government that’s supposed to serve all of its citizens equally to be using.

ParticipantMaybe. There’s something to be said for giving minimal national “air time” for mass shooters. Publicity encourages copycats.

ParticipantThanks! My point was that people being offended instead of going with the flow is the first step in reform. Maybe I misunderstood you.

ParticipantOne blip of good news doesn’t a winning streak make. I like how stocks have been acting over the last few months. Volatility is good, may it continue.
