ParticipantInvesting for climate change real estate opportunities now seems maybe prudent.

Participant

I dont like that Biden sent a letter to tv media asking them not to put Giuliani on
That is downright lame, as if Biden could not come up with other ways to fight the smear job.
It was a weak move, but are there other ways?
These days, smear jobs are more effective than ever. Much of Trump’s success can be attributed to his effective use of smear jobs. The “birther” claims were absurd and idiotic but literally millions believe them. Most of Trump’s approach to fighting his own misdeeds is to basically repeat “I know you are but what am I” over and over through right wing media.
There’s a saying: Teaching truth requires evidence but teaching falsehoods only requires confusion. Social media and 24 hour news have amplified this effect. Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes truth to many.
I think Biden has done everything that reasonably can be done to fight the smear job. Unfortunately it probably won’t be enough.
Why is it a smear job? He should’ve embraced it as a positive.
sure my sons been making money off the system. Legally. That’s called smart. But you need to elect me because only I know the way to reform the system.

ParticipantI think at the end of the day, the best part is really just fantasizing about real estate with your wife in a mountain city bakery after camping with giant cups of coffee and scones.
Real estate magazines, at the right moment, are proven aphrodisiacs. That’s science, people
Looking toward the future here at low altitude, less giddy, I feel now that the future of the san jacinto forest in 20 years will probably be bad bad bad due to global warming.
Increasing dryness and higher temps, insect infestations killing weaker trees, fires. Without a forest, the place will become death valley mountain ranges…
If I believed there would likely be a lush, healthy forest up there in my old age, I’d be much more confident about putting down some money for a home, whether vacation or relocation. It definitely feels and looks different up there than 10 years ago.
Although …while we were in the bakery we saw a team of many artsy people sketching measuring and snapping pics. Fox network people, they said, some new idyllwild show in the works…
Still, the future is in my eyes bleak, for idyllwild, and very coastal mansions. I forgot that due to temporary euphoria. Could be cool to live on a death valley denuded san jac. Hill, but that’s more like a near ghost town..

Participant
Wow. I have to reassess idylwild.
I have friends from LA who took early retirement to temecula. They love to drive to idylwild. I found that odd because as I get older, I drive far only reluctantly. I don’t find driving leisurely at all.
I was driving down the hill slightly over the speed limit and some guy behind me was honking and generally going berserk. I pulled over at first clearing and he gave me the finger.
I do hope he is injured in a solo fiery wreck.

ParticipantFunny.
I guess the more responsible thing to do would be to pay down our mortgage, but my wife finds that rather dull…

Participant
Idyllwild is world famous for rock climbing and the parking lot at Humber Park fills up every weekend with climbers. There might be some market for a hostel of sorts catering to climbers. But be aware that climbers in general are cheapskates when it comes to lodging.
Idylwild is nice for a weekend getaway if you live in So Cal, but for full time retirement I’d say there are many other options in California and elsewhere that are nicer and cheaper.
I think I’d like having 5 dirty climbers crash on my floor for $7 a night each but not sure if my wife would go for it.

ParticipantMaybe we could make $ off tourism somehow?
There have been about 2,000 people who hiked south ridge or devils slide up to tahquitz peak this year, most are patagonia clad gorgeous young people from SD. But I doubt they’re cabin shopping.
Being outdoorsy is trendy.
View to sd. Now all the trees r gone, from the cranston fire. If there were low fire risk, I think I could be relaxed there. I’ve met a bunch of retired people living up there who tramp around the mountains all day and like it.

ParticipantWe go once a month, maybe more to hike and volunteer as fire lookouts. We sleep up on tahquitz peak.
The temecula-idyllwild road didnt wash out, and lots of young fit people from SD hike up to the fire tower. In fact, more people from SD Tthan the inland empire. Hell, I’d say I’ve registered more people visiting from Seattle than the IE.
Wife likes it there. Just talking about a cabin made her happy.
I wouldve expected the Cranston fire last year and the road washouts to crater real estate but it’s still high.
Tg, some very good points.
Main reason I’m truly hesitant aside from high pricing is the possibility the whole town is engulfed in flames and we roast to death. Yes, I am a scaredyat but this is a possibility. I am ok with dying but definitely opposed to death by fire.
Still for a good deal I’d take that risk.
Say, 60 % off all cash?

Participant
isn’t that redneck country?

Participant
I know that the road closures have hit local business up there pretty hard.
Has it affected real estate prices?
Apparently not according to some guys I work with up there.
300$ sq ft for some places, small lots

Participant
“ this changing of sock style from year to year even within the same brand, is maddening.”
Yes!
So ideally get 100 pairs, and keep 80 in the package and open over time as needed.
I did this about 2010, but should have gone even bigger, maybe 200 sock pairs. The cotton percentage content and quality control of hanes just kept going down.
And Wigwam kept the quality up but changed the little logo slightly for no good reason.
Dang.
I’m afraid to go all in. I prefer to dollar cost average

what is the one true sock, if you are just going to have one sock? It is so hard to predict the Sock Market.
I guess, since you’ve given us a thousand completely original, PhD-level bits of humor, we’ll let you have that one.
I was trying to do something with elasticity and demand but that wouldve been worse.

I’m not big on buying things, but I love high quality items at commodity prices. It’s amazing that consumers today can enjoy objectively better quality china than rich people of 100 years ago.
I believe the rise of minimalism is a response to the reality that even the poor can get pretty much anything.
For sure. More People want to distinguish them by their knowledge and how they curate their own lives rather than what they consume.
