Participantthere was a wonder years episode we watched recently where Kevin’s dad was having a really hard time letting an old car go. i could relate. i have a lot of unresolved feelings. Maybe I need some therapy on this transaction.
If I kept this new car as long as I had my last car (24 years), I’d be older than my dad when he died…which means…this is probably the last car I’d ever buy…

ParticipantAlso, at 2.5% for 66 month financing thru a credit union, not sure financing can get too much cheaper…

Participantwow. car sales is different nowadays.
requested a quote on carwoo last night.
early this morning dealer quoted 18,000 on a 23,000 sticker priced new 2012 accord. That discount is greater than that generally said to be a good deal on truecar.com.
you have the ability to make counteroffers directly on carwoo.
was a lot lower than the costco price i also asked for last night (about 20,000 same car).
not sure it’ll get much lower than that. seems cheaper than I anticipated. Still need to verify the out the door price.
I see ads for used Hondas that are similar or greater in price.
I see in the paper there are very cheap leasing deals on Hondas as part of a summer sales event. probably it’s an ok time to buy a honda.

Participanti went out and test drove an accord this morning with my wife. i got a free $25.00 visa card for doing it. the salesman looked kinda young which means im old. and i was driving a car that my wife said looked like only an old person would buy. we looked at the available colors and she said, “old people colors”.
She said i looked old walking around peering in the windows.
So how do i get the best deal on these things?

Participanti did geta free muffler this year from midas with a warranty from 1993.
and it always passes smog.
I had every single receipt the car ever had, including the original sales brochure from 1988, but i threw most of it away when i moved, except for the last 7 years of receipts and some warranty stuff.
but…the radiator sprang a leak. the heater core expired. some suspension problems. starter problem…other stuff…i was rear ended in 93 on the freeway, and it’s a little crumpled, but the frame is straight. but still. the car was close to totalled 20 years ago…

Participantwell, to be fair, the $3,000 in “repair” includes a new timing belt at 240,000 miles 8,000 miles ago, a tire, and some other maintenance type items. so probably it’s far less than 3,000$ in actual repairs.
I think what happens is you just want to be done with something all of a sudden and see a stack of receipts….

Participanti have been having strong feelings of mortality in my car, as never before. I spend more time on a risky two lane road.
Have you all read the iihs mortality figures by model car? Honda Acccord does extremely well.
Course it may just be the broing ass safe dudes self select and all buy honda accords. Still, the numbers are the numbers.
Is it too late to put that drain plug in if I’ve already had someone strip the threads and an oversized plug is in?

Participanti think im gonna go buy a brand new honda accord tomorrow. i cant unscrew the bolt holding down my spare tire and have to cut it off. the drain bolt is stripped and needed an oversized plug. one tire hasa nail in it and leaks and needs to be replaced. i don’t know. sometimes it’s all kind of overwhelming.
but maybe I should just reread THE POWER OF NOW by eckhart tolle..

Participant5 spd manual hatchback. coveted DX model. dog vomited only one time in back. mouse families have nested once in back under spare tire. comes with many bumperstickers included. has all glass windows. has minor rear and front damage. dents. roof vibrates at high speeds. no radio. has glove compartment AND ashtray. Silver but peeling. also the hatchback struts dont workso you can get guillotined if not careful. i use a vise pliers to hold it open. will show buyer how.
has had 3,000 in repairs over the last 18 months with receipts.
i was thinking of maybe ripping out all the upholstery and carpeting and removing all the seats and just installing one fancy leather racing drivers seat. gotta get rid of smell.
also wondering if a well written craigslist ad could become a viral internet sensation on this car…

Participantlife is messy and non vacuum like. organic things can be kind of grossand slimy.
but there is great beauty in it.
THE SOUND OF A WILD SNAIL EATING.
great little nonfiction book about a very sick woman who finds great companionship with a snail. maybe the best book i have ever read.
as for housing, I want to be interested, but it seems like a boring period right now. not that nothing strange is going to happen, but right now, seems dull. more interested int he wild snail…which is not to say im not congratualting you on your purchase. you’ll be ok… have fun…life is short…

Participanti was thinking about listing my 1989 honda civic on craigslist at a king’s ransom…say, 2,350?. my wife was laughing hysterically. maybe I could get it though. it’s just that cosmetically it is veryvery very bad. and has high mileage. and smells bad. but it runs nicely.
i’m ready for a new car now… i would love to get some a/c and airbags…and upholstery. and no smell. and no major oil leak.
