Participant
Like Bernie Sanders said, university education is now an extension of High School. The bar has been raised.
There are plenty of paths to “success” but if kids are smart, why not give them “the best”, if you can afford it.
If you can afford it, what are you saving the money for? To buy big trucks and expensive toys like your brethren in TX and OK, do?
Except for fear of the future, lately I think it’s best to consume and give money now. It’s not going to be more fun in the future. Help from my folks would’ve been much more useful 20 years ago when my kids were little. Now, it’s not really needed….

ParticipantHell I just realized I’m spending a grand a year on piano lessons.
I went to a recital in encinitas this weekend. The whole thing got me weepy. I was deeply moved. I like taking him to the lesson Friday nites. Little ritual. I go for a walk and call my mom. It’s close by. Sometimes we stop after for snacks.

Results? Merit? I don’t know that politics and the ability of manipulative sociopaths to seize control will ever be supplanted by mere merit.
This article by venkatesh rao on the series THE OFFICE explains it all and is a must read if you think the office is Shakespeare for our time,
Found the article to be quite humorous. Thanks for providing.
I have watched THE OFFICE in its entirety 3x . I find it to be very instructional. But venkatesh raos view really brought it together for me. I would like to see more high level critical analysis of THE OFFICE, personalky.

Participant

The one thing you are correct about though is the “pay their dues” theory. Like I said before, we are results oriented people who believe in a just and meritocratic society. We believe that you don’t deserve a job because of the color of your skin, the amount of gray hair you have, or the amount of hours you sit in front of your computer. We believe in the bottom line, how much $ you bring into the company, how much impact you have to the bottom line.
My observation is millennials also care about social justice and the environment. They care about what they eat and how they consume. Maybe they don’t care all the much to become activists, but the right message of compassion is important.
I guess one way to get rid of the Supreme Court would be for the senate to never consent and then just wait for the oldsters on the bench to die off…..
When I heard Scalia died, the 1st thing to cross my mind was: CTA
And I wouldn’t put it past them…
