ParticipantTimely thread TG and fun to read as always.
BMW has a car that bridges the hydrogen infrastructure barrier:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_Hydrogen_7Good point Threadkiller, on the high MPG diesels that Europe is crawling with and we just can’t seem to get many of. Ford makes a great economy diesel, unfortunately our wise Gov. sees fit in making sure it’s just not feasible for Ford to provide it to the US market.
I think Compresses Natural Gas (CNG) cars have a role to play and for the same reasons TG gives for Hydrogen. Oil will be front and center in our minds and wallets again; why not put stimulus money and people to work heading that bad reality off at the pass?
All cities have a network of natural gas lines already in place. Most already have some CNG vehicle refueling stations. Many are already running busses on CNG. CNG powered vehicles are ideal for inner city use because they are much cleaner burning. America is awash in natural gas that does not need the dirty processing that crude requires.
Current car and truck models can be converted to CNG use (no need for completely new models or complete retooling) so American car manufacturers could be put to work making these CNG cars ASAP.
Why not plan ahead? Let’s build Nuke plants for electricity (how about the buried ones so we don’t have leak worries)? Burning an assload of natural gas thru turbines to create electricity is a dumb use of a priceless resource.
Let’s use natural gas in cars and trucks in cities where creating refueling stations is viable. With that we will be taking pressure off of crude oil use and price.
America over the past 30 years seems little interested in long term planning, just immediate needs and desires.
Tinfoil hat time….it’s so obvious to so many Americans that if we need to create a bunch of debt to stimulate the economy we should spend it on things that:
1) Provide tons of jobs
2) Are cleaner technology.
3) Create lasting benefits for the American people
4) Leave something of great value to future generations, (not just FIRE economy debt).
5) Result in cheaper energy (eventually). Why can’t Obama and the string pullers see this? My guess is they couldn’t possibly miss it; they just “want” something else for our future.

Rt.66, please tell me, what’s more American, Chevy made in Mexico or Honda made in America?
[/quote]Why not buy a Chevy made by an American company in America such as…
a Chevy MalibuOr any of the many Fords that meet that criteria?
Why do you feel the need to boil the choices down to your example?
We have choices. Don’t make excuses, a tiny bit of research could have lead you to the best purchase for American workers and America’s deficit.
Honda and Toyota and Hyundai insourcing is not done from a charitable standpoint. On the surface, yes it appears your Honda built in Ohio is a good thing (surely better than 100% foriegn) but their are deeper concerns:
The Hidden Costs of Insourcing: Higher Trade Deficits and Job Losses for U.S. Workers
http://www.epi.org/publications/entry/ib236/No need to debate your querry, because neither choice is the best choice and there is no need to resort to just those choices.

ParticipantYou and a gazillion other self serving Americans voted with their purchasing power.
For decades you have sent a message to American industry and lawmakers. You said “I don’t care about American companies or American jobs” I would rather go with the hope that “I” will gain a tiny personal advantage by buying a Hyundai, Honda, Toyota…..
The result? Decades of stagnant wages. What did you think would happen if we shipped hundreds of thousands of good paying jobs with benefits over-seas, with nothing (equal) on the horizon to replace them?
We need to replace those jobs of actual productivity with something right (even if it produces next to nothing really)? Enter the FIRE economy; problem is….that’s not sustainable and actually will have a lasting negative effect relative to the temporary jobs it provided.
The Gov. needs revenues and the economy needs “industries” right? Enter another bogus “industry”; the Cap and Tax horseshit, wonderful. Let’s chop GM down, ship real jobs making real stuff to China and replace them with some more hocus-pocus ala-FIRE BS.
You import buyers deserve what we all are getting.
Italy gains Chrysler and Opel, China gets GM jobs and Japanese automakers gain an even greater American market share. Self serving, narrow minded Americans get their Accords, supporters of American industry and GOOD jobs get the shaft.
Admit it, the truth will set you free….. Just say it……
“I wanted a Honda because I thought “I” would gain an advantage by owning it over supporting an American company”
I guess to you people the better countries won huh?
