ParticipantLA_Renter is right. The timing of this news is very suspect.

I would welcome Spanish as the de facto language in California. Learning something new will do us good. Better than sitting on our asses and complaining. As far as I’m concerned, the small minded white people might as well go back to the middle of America.
San Diego will be more fun if it’s more Miami like.
To me, change is an opportunity to learn and grow. Life is an adventure. Let’s make the best of it.

ParticipantI concur. Although the Persians weren’t Muslim so I don’t really see the parallel. The Greeks were certainly closer, in terms of affinity, to the Near East and the Black Sea than to Europe. The Ancient Greeks were never (and would never have been) Christians.
I also like Chinese philosophy. It explains everyday life very well also.

ParticipantHow much do you guys pay for TV? What’s the NPV of the purchase price plus all the monthly costs ad infinitum?
HD service from the cable company is very costly.
I just get TV over the air. I have a 37″ lcd and it’s just fine by me. I can’t foresee buying another TV for a long, long time.

ParticipantI’ve yet to hear of anyone getting a 1099-C for cancellation of debt.
Unless borrowers get a tax statement, they won’t be paying any taxes.I think that homeowners will be walking in droves. Once people hear it’s OK to do so, they’ll be saying bye-bye to the lenders.

ParticipantNot surprising. People will inexorably keep in borrowing more to keep up the lifestyle. That’s the very reason I think that homeowners will walk from their houses rather than do without everyday luxuries (nice clothes, starbucks, etc…). Those are much easier to afford and to indulge on than that mega mortgage.

ParticipantAs much as we’d like to think we live in the best place in the world, foreigners increasingly see America as not so welcoming.
Well-to-do arabs used to come to America for medical treatment. Now they go to India, Thailand and Singapore. They are much more likely to buy in Dubai than in So. Cal.
Well-to-Chinese are now more like to buy in Asia, closer to home.
To a lot of people around the world, the American suburban lifestyle is boring and unliveable. If they have money, they’re unlike to move here to be isolated in mc mansions. If one really wanted a suburban life, American style suburbs are being duplicated around the world. Even Almaty, Kazakhstan has an “American Village.”

ParticipantLike I said I’m not defending the union. But I’m generally suspicious of large public/private partnerships where the public is subsidizing private profits. Cost overuns generally run to 100% of the original estimate. Developers often times go back to the politicians many times to re-negotiate better deals after the fact (see the Padres and the Chargers).
Here Gaylord is saying that a 5% to 7.5% of the project killed the whole thing. Give me a break. There’s more to it and blaming the union is the red herring. The real estate market changed and Gaylord wanted Chula Vista to give more.
Citizens are not feeling so flush these days so there’s little stomach for more give-away of public assets. Think about it. Chula Vista residents are plain middle class. They’d be stupid to let their tax dollars support a luxury bayfront development so that outsiders can come in and flip.
