ParticipantI don’t think that the Democrats will do any better on Iraq than the Republicans. The point is that Iraq was a Republican mistake so they should pay a political price for the bad policy. We should never have gotten into Iraq. Our French friends warned us but we didn’t listen.
It’s like buying a house in 2003/2004. You have to take the big loss, swallow your pride and move on. Either that, or stay for the next 20 to 30 years.

ParticipantI like to use quotes around invest because true investing means doing risk and cost vs. return analysis. Buying houses on a whim thinking that appreciation is a sure bet is not “investing.”
I have no sympathy for people who “invested” in houses and are now loosing their shirts.
Sometimes when I drive someplace, I’d swing by and see the new developments. Even now, there are always people who are talking about “investing.”
By the way, I own real estate, but I never thought about “investing” in anything that cost 3X rent to buy.

ParticipantAs powayseller said, we should call it housing credit card (and not ATM) because it does have to be paid back.
I bet these guys used their equity to
1) buy a luxury gas guzler such as a Cadillac Escalade,
2) “invest” in other real estate.
3) help their children “invest” in real estate and “get started” in the big league.PerryChase
ParticipantI believe that this site draws from the County Recorder’s database, rather than the MLS database like Zillow does. Zillow does not show sales from developers that don’t post on MLS. Often times, Zillow will say “no sales history” because the house was bought directly from the builder.
SDlookup.com shows you all sales.
I love this site. You can do a lookup of a property and then do a quick review (a la amazon). Then prospective buyers can see what you posted. Every person considering buying in SD should do a SDlookup.

ParticipantI’m rooting for the Democrats. However, it won’t be all that bad if the Republicans hang on…. because that will mean a landslide accross the board for the Democrats in 2008.
Iraq, like the housing market, will not get better. Iraq will devolve into civil war before long.

ParticipantPerhaps because most of the new developments in Orange County are gated communities?
I agree. I’d much rather spend the money on fixing up a house than on HOA in a new master planned community.

Participantjg put it perfectly well. Rent is not a waste. I love the service of a “roof over your head” analogy. Either way you have to pay for it. So might as well find something that you’d enjoy.

ParticipantI don’t mind the density. But I hate the prices. I beleive that there should be a price density trade-off. The higher the density, the lower the price. I think that if Downtown condos were all in the 100k-150k range, we’d have a fun thriving hub with all sorts of employment and things to do.

ParticipantIf you’re willing to pay in rent what you’d pay in mortgage interest on a house you like, then you can have a nice place to live in. You could actually afford to rent a nicer place than your could buy.
For example, in La Jolla, you can rent a house for $3000/month. That only buys you a house Mira Mesa. So why not rent and enjoy the lifestyle?

ParticipantIf you’re handy and
1. want to fix up the bathroom and kitchen before selling the house.
2. lay some sod before the open house.

ParticipantSchwarzenegger will win so voting for Angelides and giving the Gov. a narrower margin would ensure that he’s not too cocky.
I’m voting for Prop 87 because Bill Clinton says so. He’s my hero. 🙂

ParticipantWhy do you have problem with North Korea now? Because the Bushies came in and canceled the deal that Clinton struck with the North Koreans, just because it was a Clinton deal.
Interesting that the South Koreans don’t even support the Bushies on North Korea. And they are supposed to be our allies.

ParticipantIf you don’t want the Republicans to do something, you have a Democrat come out and say just that.

ParticipantI have been to Japan and I have Japanese friend with whom I’ve discussed this situation. I would not be surprised to see the same happen in California.
BTW, Vancouver had a revival in 1997 with the Chinese hot money from Hong Kong. Want the best Chinese food in North America? Go to Vancouver.
