ParticipantWhy shouldn’t public literature reflect the public. When I was a kid, I never saw asians in books unless it was about Coolies or bad “Japs” . The most famous black child in a book was a Sambo. Now they are everywhere and in a fair light . It’s normal….though this also has a politically correct feeling to it sometimes.

ParticipantWe are all born with a pretty much equal level of predisposition to being gay.
Unfortunately for scaredy, environment did not help him at all…and he wasn’t much of a babe magnet either.(Though his lack of babe magnetism could easily be just as environmentally developed as physical)Even the scientific studies that people use to support that gay individuals were “born that way” conclude that there also have to be very environmental factors of some intensity and duration. Some think that can happen as early as during pregnancy but this is not conclusive and doesn’t exclude post birth environment.
The environmental factors that contribute to homosexuality, even if they were understood, are mostly untouchable at most levels public and private. It’s easy to understand why we should treat homosexuals with kindness and compassion no matter what we believe about any of it.

ParticipantThe twist on polygamy and hidden polygamy seems trollish too.

Participant
I think you are all missing his point.
The point is not against homosexuals.
The point is that the school is forcing discussions of sexuality earlier than he is comfortable with.
It’s a good point.
Story about a biological family , nice pictures of a boy and girl. Someone did some
baby making…why should two women who acquire a child by non-reproductive means be called out for eliciting thoughts about the birds and the bees in children? How did old mother hubbard get all those children?…OMG!

Participant
Ok – nobody responded to my earlier point, and I’m curious as to why not (maybe i’m boring . . .). Would the people on this board be ok if the family was polygamous (i.e. more than 2 people)? If all the members of the family are fine with it, shouldn’t that be ok to include in a children’s book?
Polygamists are not adopting, or they are? Has that gone somewhat mainstream?
Does the law support it?I want my kids to be able to deal with the actual world, not one someone wants ,or has invented in some compare and contrast story that ultimately isn’t relevant.
Lesbians adopt children. Men marry men. Those things are prevalent. It isn’t really a matter of what I think is right or wrong. I think a lot of things are right and wrong.

ParticipantA story about adoption isn’t particularly sexual. The same story could be told about a man and a woman and it just isn’t even in the realm of sex. I have read at least a few stories of adopted kids to my children and I didn’t see sex in it.
I don’t think there is anything to worry about , I even let my kids listen to KPBS radio! OMG! I think they say “same sex” and “gay and lesbian” at least 10 times and hour. I do cringe sometimes , but it’s in pop music , TV and movies…it’s going to be everywhere. Well raised kids can deal with it.
What bothers me is when the kids bring sexually explicit conversation, including homophobic stuff, into the classroom from home. Other kids pick it up and it spreads. Some of the first and second graders do this. I think there should be an intervention into their home life to put a stop to it. I guess often times there is some sort or warning or discipline.

ParticipantWe might not be anymore alive or dead than the people who came before us. We are very primitive. From Lady Gaga to the queen of England and Pope to a guy on work furlough destined to fuck it up and go to jail again, we are all very primitive. It’s exciting how primitive we are.

Participant
Folks, we are missing something critical here. Who has had a discussion with their kids about the negative externalities of eating Halloween candy, and who is going to pay for those?
Sure, I tell them if they screw up their teeth with candy, then Christmas will be cancelled. They said they will just get Obama teeth and Obama Christmas presents(Their mother is a liberal).

ParticipantMy wife and I tax it very heavily. The kids get to pick 5 pieces each. The rest , most of it anyway, is given away.

ParticipantCarenter, The assessor uses a price per square foot that is pretty generously low. It’s adjust for quality and if air conditioning is added and other things but it doesn’t approximate constructions cost usually . Of course it isn’t going to be a market price per square foot because that included the value of land and entitlements.

ParticipantYou might have a phone number to the assessor that goes directly to the person handling your case. This would be on your letter that the form came with , or attached to it. Call them and ask them how to fill it out so that you don’t pay too much…They will help you..I know it sounds like a joke but it is easier than trying to fix mistakes. As suggested above above, make sure to stress how it is mostly landscaping…attribute most the budget to that if you can within honesty, of course.
A future buyer could try to figure out your cost basis , some people do that or start to do that before the realtor straightens them out, but that’s a waste of time. Market will dictate price.

ParticipantThat sounds like such a cool thing to do. I have about 15 olive trees but I don’t water them and they make little olives. I think they were planted to feed branches to goats in hot weather. Love my orange trees though.
