Participant
Anyone know of any other non-emergency medical procedures that minors are allowed to undergo without parental consent ?
Navydoc? other medical pros ? Anyone ?
An interesting thing happens when a minor gets pregnant. She becomes emancipated to all decisions regarding the pregnancy, and can do anything pregnancy related without parental consent. In this way we can perform a surgical treatment for ectopic pregnancy without the parents ever knowing their daughter was pregnant. I am unaware of any procedures you can perform on non-pregnat minors, but in regards to their reproductive health you can treat STD’s or provide contraception without notifying the parents.
I remember having an interesting admission as a resident of a 16 year old with chlamydia positive pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and had one heck of a time dodging the issue with her mother.

Participant
Not quite sure when Ru486 first became available in Europe, but in the States it was FDA approved early this century. Many physicians used it off-label though for quite some time. I went to U. of Pittsburgh for Med School and many of the studies for medical abortion were performed there.
As for when it can be used, it depends on the agent. Ru486 coupled with misoprostol can be used up to 9 weeks, Methotrexate regimens (the drug we use to treat ectopics) can be used up to 7 weeks.
Be aware that medical regimens are ONLY given to those women who are sufficiently motivated to complete a comprehensive follow up plan. It is absolutely NOT fire and forget, as many women need dilation and curretage (D&C) afterward for incomplete abortions.
Many women choose medical abortion as they feel they have more control, where a surgical abortion is a more submissive process. I don’t perform either anymore, but will counsel women for both, then give the appropriate referral. When I’m back in my uniform next summer it won’t be an issue, as elective terminations are forbidden at military hospitals.

ParticipantThe earliest you can see the embryo with ultrasound is about 4.5 weeks past the last menstrual period, or about 2.5 weeks after conception. A surgical abortion can be performed any time after the embryo can be visualized. Visualization inside the uterus is essential to prevent the attempt to abort an ectopic pregnancy.
Prior to 9 weeks after LMP you need to know exactly what to look for to find the embryo in the pathology tray. After 9 weeks it starts to look like a baby in there.
Abortion is obtainable in CA up to 24 weeks, unless a lethal anomaly is discovered later in pregnancy.
I voted against the prop, as I believe it will lead to increases in back alley illegal abortions, especially in this age group. Abortion MUST remain legal, even though I personally feel that you lose a little piece of you soul after you perform each one.

ParticipantThe really funny, and deceptive part, is how much of a deal they make of the 20 MPG city figure. This sounds so awesome to people who drive standard vehicles. They think “wow it must get like 30 MPG on the highway!”. What the ad fails to explain is that hybrid vehicles typically get significantly WORSE fuel mileage at highway speeds. Ever drive a Prius at 70 MPH? Sounds like the engine’s going to fly apart. I’ll bet this beast gets about 15 MPG on the freeway. Probably better off in the long run buying the standard version. At least it’s likely to hold up. Although considering GM quality lately, that may not even be a safe bet.
I hate to say it due to the impending job loss, but I don’t think GM’s gonna make it. Maybe not any of the other US automakers either.
