Nice to see this bumped as we’re now reconsidering solar at home again.
Covid and all stopped that initially, but we’re looking at like a 8Wp system and batteries if possible. I thought I read SGIP for batteries is only allowed for a solar panel install and not afterwards.
Already have 1 EV, plan to get another EV as the next vehicle and timing depends on what new EVs come out.
There is NO financial calculation I’ve seen that ever makes home batteries make sense, but for me, I suppose with yearly fire dangers -> power cuts (even in Texas which laughed at CA with our rolling blackouts and has to do it now), I suppose it’s simply a ‘luxury’ I like/want. That and of course, getting off SDG&E power from 4-9pm and just use batteries completely overnight.
The new Ford F150 Lightning can do Vehicle to Home eventually and many vehicles may have this, but that means you lose car power if you needed to drive and no idea how long that will take to come out.
Anyone use/researched Sonnen batteries vs. Tesla Powerwalls?
Reading more and with NEM3.0 proposed in CA now, we may just do solar and delay batteries if the cost is too high and instead, opt for Vehicle to Home eventually.
joecParticipant
This NYTimes article says a year to 18 months.
Personally I believe that the US economy is all about cash flow. When cash flow gets hit, there will be bankruptcy galore. It takes time to dig out.https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/20/podcasts/the-daily/coronavirus-how-long-lockdowns.html
I am optimistic in the long run in that life goes on. But there are winners and losers.
Just think of a dual income family in San Diego that qualified for a home based on both salaries. Maybe they felt good and invested in a rental that generates $200 positive cash flow. A job loss for 6 months and maybe a relocation may put them under. Not good.
I have a family member where they have a rental which isn’t paying rent now since tenants got laidoff/etc, but they have very high paying job, even qualified for PPP for another biz and suspended their own mortgage because they can for a year so they aren’t going under anytime soon. Also tons of 0% CC offers to hoard cash in case of further problems.
For prime areas in SD, I’m guessing if someone bought at a good time like a lot of the folks here, their mortgages are quite low due to refinancing and lots of home equity built up due to ~50% asset appreciation so if 1 person still has a job of the 2, they can probably keep their home without issue. Assuming they also have a HEL and decent credit, can stretch this for a long time.
joecParticipant
In LA the big surge never came, they have at least 1000 empty beds.
Even without the surge, it seems we still lack basic PPEs so until that happens, I don’t think we should be letting things get back to normal if medical workers don’t even have basic supplies.

joecParticipantI wanted to bump this since I am now considering finally getting Solar/batteries for the home.
Wanted to see if anyone has recently looked into solar and batteries and I’m sure the “deal” isn’t as great anymore since net metering is sorta crap for how much they credit you. Numbers don’t have to be a net positive, but as a recent new EV driver, avoiding the gas station, not having to SMOG (hate that) and instant torque on an EV is just too nice (free carpool lane too I guess for a while).
Fed Tax Credit is only 26% now, but we are running 1 EV currently and plan to get another as our next vehicle (most likely a Tesla MY). Have to see if any installers have SGIP credits for batteries.
SDG&E rates seem to jump whenever they need it and our ideal goal is to get energy storage to deal with fire danger blackouts (probably yearly now) and pretty much never use SDG&E if possible (charge EVs off batteries to a certain point (I know Tesla Powerwalls have this feature)) and go back to the grid if needed once the batteries hit a certain level in the middle of the night when rates are lower.
From what I have read, home battery storage can never charge cheaply from the grid so depending on panel size, we’ll need to size/spec for enough sun charging to restore batteries during the day. Our roof isn’t that big so we’re probably just going to put as many panels as we can.
Any recs on installers (I see only a few Tesla Powerwall certified)…
joecParticipantI’ve always found this story fascinating and how it all went down…I watched the HBO special as well.
Not surprising that she’s not getting much $$ after swindling so many people.
Surprised she’s dating some younger heir.
joecParticipantI don’t think I see sky high expectations around really. Most houses seem to sell within 5% of listing from the ones I see around…sell within 30 days IMO.
That said, with such a small supply, if this is for your 1st primary to live in, just finding a place to live in that you like at this point in your and your family’s life is probably priceless.
I know that was the best thing for us. No more noisy ghetto neighbors. No more rent increases, having to move…Yes, you don’t want to overpay, like it was mentioned, if you are just paying a mortgage the same amount and living your life, I don’t think you’d think too much about that small amount more or less you over/underpaid.
Just find something which pencils out financially and not have to worry about renting/moving/all the time seems like the easier path…All IMO of course since I hate moving…With kids, it’s even worst.
With tax breaks for higher income folks, it may pencil out better than rent since rent is insanely expensive nowadays, unlike before…
I hear families are renting in Silicon Valley now for like 4-5k/month to “Share” a house with another family.
I used to live for 1k/month I think way way back.
joecParticipant
joec, how does voting for a third or fourth party candidate matter any more than voting R or D?
You seem to be advocating for direct presidential elections and a parliamentary system closer to what they have in France or Italy. I’d be fine with that because the left would win many more elections. Right wing social policies such as gun rights, anti abortion, etc… would be marginalized to insignificance.
There is no equivalence between Hillary and Donald.
I agree with njtosd who posted before that people naturally lean more liberal or conservative (but the parties are not natural and do evolve). Joec, I think that you lean more conservative and you’re not happy how the conservative party has evolved. Too bad. I know that misery loves company, but don’t expect others to feel the same way about their party.
Actually, I was a Bernie supporter so that would probably put me way way way off from being Conservative…
I even voted for Obama once.
That’s the problem I think with this election and politics in general, you bash Hillary and everyone thinks you are a neo-Nazi/KKK Trump loving Republican.
People can’t choose to think their own thing without everyone else prejudging this or that. Maybe that’s just society in general and that’s ok and just how it is.
I suppose I am independent and don’t support to neither party ideology. Probably why I complain about the 2 party system in general overall.
I am also non-white (Asian) immigrant so Trump winning may send me and all the Asian race back in camps if there is a war with China. I probably just don’t like Hillary and that’s that.
joecParticipant
Yeah, knock yourself out and vote for anyone you want.
But saying “I won’t vote” means one doesn’t care not only about the presidential but also about all the local and state races where votes very much matter.
Yeah, you are putting words in my text…I just said I won’t vote for either major party prez candidate, it has nothing to do with not voting for anything else.
As I’ve said before, I hate partisan politics. I would like there to be no 2 party system since it forces, say all Republicans to be pro-life since they won’t even win their primary to get to the general.
Studies have shown that it’s simply impossible to win as an independent candidate due to the nature of US politics and this is why Trump and Bernie both ran as Rep and Dem respectively. I’d think most people would classify both as independents. I think it was stated today that Bernie may try again next time as a pure independent…
You’re also stuck with pigeonholing people when they claim a party and to believe in one thing when really, it’s just a debate of separate issues and that’s it.
Harvey, you are much better than me so be happy that you are already.

This election as shown from what Hillary’s game plan is as well as Trump is don’t vote for the other guy. It’s all about who I hate less in the white house and not anyone really liking either candidate.
That is not, nor has it ever been Hillary’s game plan. She has extraordinarily detailed writings on almost every policy. You may not agree with them all (I certainly don’t), but they are available.
The negative is what much of the press focuses on, it’s not necessarily what the candidates focus on. Trump has nothing but hate and lies about Hillary. So that’s what he sells. And it’s the only thing his supporters are buying.
I disagree with this. Like she supported TPP, then Bernie came and now she doesn’t support it. From everything I have read/seen, the Clinton’s has historically been free-traders. There is nothing wrong about that, but
Also, in terms of policy, pretty much anything proposed isn’t new or mostly, there are loopholes to actually fail to get them implemented since some won’t balance, would raise taxes, etc etc etc…
Can you name anything of significance Hillary did as Secretary of state? I see that question asked from Hillary supporting media and nothing comes up.
Also, as a NON Trump voter (I won’t vote for him), I just think people should also own up that Hillary is also a terrible candidate and distrusted and hated by many as well.
Another comment I hate about her is, she stated that if she was elected President, she will change/shutdown her foundation to foreign money.
If there was a hint of shadiness there now, why not just shut the damn thing down already? That’s been asked by left leaning media as well. Why wait till she is president?
Overall, both candidates are bad IMO…Hillary is no better IMO than Trump and I’d be glad if both leave the campaign honestly.
You even have strong democrats who have trouble commenting positively when asked about her untrustworthiness (Congress lady, forgot who)…
It’s a game.
joecParticipant
BG, maybe Hillary was publicly humiliated. She survived it so don’t you think that makes her a person of very stong character? Do you want spouses do divorce at every hint of social humiliation? Some religions don’t allow divorces.
I was looking at a recipe that called for mirepoix. The Duke of Mirepoix was a nobleman of high rank but little talent. But the Duke’s wife was a favorite of the French king who bestowed favors onto the Duke. Everyone at court knew.
I think her staying makes her more a character to want to stay possibly for Chelsea and it was politically beneficial for her to stay since Bill was the President…
I don’t think it has anything to do with her strong character.
IF anything, leaving and being successful without Bill would make her tons stronger on her own I’d think.
This election as shown from what Hillary’s game plan is as well as Trump is don’t vote for the other guy.
It’s all about who I hate less in the white house and not anyone really liking either candidate.
The winner will be who is hated least by the electorate in maybe 5 states.
August 23, 2016 at 4:10 PM in reply to: OT: Chinese Airline Companies offering $300k+ for pilots…. #800825joecParticipantflyer, how did you get into flying (the training/hours/career/etc)?
I suppose living a sheltered immigrant Asian lifestyle, the military or flying thing would be impossible for me…
I did learn a musical instrument and studied engineering….

Once again, who’s vote is counted? This “I don’t vote because the outcome is already determined by voters” logic is pretty nonsensical and even childish.
I respect the people that actually do vote – the ones that make what is seemingly inevitable actually happen.
I vote. I will always vote. If I believe I’m the only one voting for a candidate and millions of others are voting for the other one, I still vote.
I don’t generally get wrapped in patriotism but many people have made incredible sacrifices so that we can vote. The one thing we can do to honor them is to actually exercise that right once a year.
lol, your lack of understanding of the presidential electoral college definitely points out your ignorance of the matter.
Maybe your comments didn’t come out right in text, but it certainly came out to me as a high and mighty I’m better than you since I vote attitude. At least that’s what I read out of it…
That said, I think most of us will vote for other items on the ballot, just some of us may not for either majority prez candidate since they both are bad IMO.
They are probably historically the most unfavorable in history.
Also, per the last comment, a lot of politics is like a coronation. Like it was uncovered, the dem primary which the dem national committee was supposed to be neutral on, came to be heavily Clinton favoring so it was not a “fair” primary as laid out in how they were supposed to be run.
I’d be happy if both candidates dropped out since having a 3rd or 4th candidate split the votes would just let congress pick and that probably isn’t good neither.
There probably is a reason why so few young people are interested in elections since most people feel there is little they can do and the “machine” just keeps running electing people who are loyal to the establishment…(old boys/girls club)…
joecParticipantSeems like supporting any of them is bad…Good thing in CA, our prez vote won’t be close…
I just tell people I don’t like either of them and not being in a swing state, if Trump or Hillary wins, not like anything I can do about it.
I hope they both drop out.
August 21, 2016 at 6:02 PM in reply to: OT: Chinese Airline Companies offering $300k+ for pilots…. #800780joecParticipantDo you still need 20/20 vision to be a pilot? Also, are a lot of pilots ex-military pilots?
I always wanted to be a pilot, but thought there was a vision restriction (there wasn’t lasik 30 years ago)…
I think all jobs have their downsides…being a pilot seems better than most jobs out there I’d guess.
